Since we can't post polls here anymore, I thought I'd do an informal one.

How many email addresses do you use on a weekly basis? For me, it's two: my home personal one, and my workplace one. Occasionally I use a third, but for every day-to-day tasks it's just the two.

I'm asking because I'm doing an email-based app and need to know how many addresses I should support for each user. I'm thinking three is a good limit, because one for home, one for work, and one spare. I can't allow unlimited addresses because then the user can just give the app to other people for free and they'd be able to use it without paying.

I think most people will be managing their various accounts in one email app. I use Thunderbird.

What does your app do? Why does it have to be email address specific?

It's a mailing-list type of app, where only paid users get an email. As a courtesy, I was going to allow them 2 or 3 email addresses to receive the messages, because if I allowed unlimited addresses, then anyone could get the messages without paying.

So to everyone who replied and said they have 5 or more addresses, are you saying you log into each of them every week to check for new emails? Why do you have so many? And why would anyone have 11 addresses that they check every week? Doesn't make sense. I assume they're just throwaway addresses that you don't use seriously? If so, they don't count, so please re-post with your real actual number of serious accounts that you use for personal or business purposes every week.

On a weekly basis... perhaps 3 email addresses:

1 (.edu) for school and job searching
1 (gmail) for my website and projects
1 (gmail) for personal and everything else

Although, depending on where I'm working I sometimes have a work address.

And I have 3+ "throwaway" addresses for older, oddball reasons.

Right now I use 5; 3 work & 2 private (I have also 3 Junk e-mails to avoid exposing my normal e-mail to too much spam).

Of the work e-mails, two (of the three) needs VPN - one is with Lotus Notes and the other one is a Exchange server.

No, daily. Or better: hourly for some, every 15 minutes for some others.

One main email address, very effectively spam protected, to be used in a general way.

One more private address, given only to friends.

One address from the italian postal service, used to get confirmation for various postal operations (payments, certified snail mail, etc).

One for my www site, to get contacted from people visiting it and so used only for matters related to that.

One for my trading activities.

One for questionable contacts.

Infinite email addresses: "catch-all"

Everywhere I register myself I take the name of the site as prefix for my email address, so I'm always able to proof which site sold my email address to spam providers.

I have a hotmail account I don't use except for dealing with my webhost if I am having account problems.

Other than that I have

1 Private personal address that I use for Friends/Family and to receive work-related e-mail.

1 general address for my web site

1 general address for a subdomain

1 general account (aptly named "spam") which I use to do all my online activities, like shopping, forum registrations, etc.

And that's a neat idea... why didn't I think of that.. Do you blackmail them for money?

If I finally get a job it will be 4...

technically is is 5 already because sales and support emails come to me as well for my business but!!!

I have a sbcglobal.net email that I can't access so 6 but in reality 3.
