PureBasic Forums - English

Being new to the "PB platform", I have spent many hours scouring this forum and anything I can find. I realize that the latest release 4.51 was June 2010, however, I can't help but feel like maybe I should not spend too much time learning this system. Most, if not all of the limited information or tutorials that I have found seems to be dated by years. MANY links to information are broken and there seems to be little support or education.

I really want to like, use, and thus support the PB community, but I am concerned that I am coming to the party after last call. What am I missing? My intention is not to bash this at all. On the contrary, I am looking for positive feedback and some reassurance that this is going to be a viable platform going forward.

PureBasic is alive and well. Here's a link to some tutorial information provided by bluznl: http://www.xs4all.nl/~bluez/purebasic/.

Broken links are an artifact of the internet. Since PureBasic is a language which grows and makes improvements certain things become outdated. That is just evidence of how alive PureBasic is. You'll note for instance that PureBasic has a 64-bit version for the latest wave of CPU's and OS's. You can keep track of how to use the newest features here in the forums. The older messages provide useful information that can usually be adapted to the most recent update.

If you have any questions just post them in the forum, usually after a search, to see the responses of the live community.

The party is still going strong and will be for the foreseeable future.

OMG, not again! Another newbie waltzes in and starts worrying about the future
of a language that has been going strong and supported for 10 years now.

Join that thread if you must. No need to start a duplicate thread about the
same concerns. But I must say: your concerns are unfounded. Here's the
release history of PureBasic:

You can see it's regularly updated with both bug fixes and new features.

I just checked your posts and every question you've asked here, has been
answered by the community. Granted, that's not "official" support but you
got results. What can be better than that? I'm on lots of other forums
where I ask questions that NEVER get answered. These forums are truly
an exceptional resource!

PureBasic is alive.
However you just cant compare the community to other big languages like Visual Basic. PureBasic is a small language with a small community, so there are less tutorials and stuff. But that does not mean it's dead at all.

Well, often you aren't the nicest person either.
I think we all know what PB wants to say and that he didn't mean it that harsh way.

As a newbie, sure I had stupid questions. But I didn't come in and
start saying the language is doomed and the party is over, did I?
No. I had coding questions, which is a BIG difference. I think you
need to look past how I responded and maybe ask yourself, what
is it about PureBasic that is making newbies come in and raise
such topics? There's obviously room for improvement somewhere.
And don't pretend you disliked my response: as a team member
you desperately wish you could answer a newbie like that!

As c4s said, I'm just trying to promote the language here and
help newbies see that it's NOT doomed. Okay, maybe I need to
improve the way I say it, too. Point taken. I hereby apologize
to BillyBob for the way I answered.

Look, I never said it was doomed and I don't want to create a stir. I asked an honest question and frankly when searching this forum, I find it difficult to drill down to what I am looking for.

What prompted my post yesterday was when I was on the PB Official site and on this page in particular http://www.purebasic.com/links.php. Take a minute and click on the links and tell how many pages are not there? I counted 3 before I stopped.

When the "designers and sellers of the package" can not maintain a SIMPLE website, one does tend to think about the points that I raised.

Anyway, for the record I did pay the price and I have downloaded and started using PB and I love it. I just was just thinking out loud.

I appreciate those who've responded in an understanding and polite manner, thank you.

He hasn't done it, too. He just asked, if it could be, that
our loved language is dead.

PB is developed by a very small team. So it isn't so easy
as it looks like. It is not only one single page, which want
to be up-to-date. But i agree, it is not all perfect.

It will be a sad day for me when the PureBasic Webpage gets more attention from Fred and Freak.
One has to be amazed at what is done by so small a team.
So hey, Christmas is coming, and I prefer new features and bug fixes.

Welcome anyway! Have fun with it, I know I did, or at least I know I should have had some fun in between all the (coding) frustrations

The forum's search function is not the greatest - especially for short search terms. I've forgotten which user created it but there is a Firefox Add-On to search the forum that does a much better job than the forum's native search.

repeated tip: to search three lettered word like bmp, php ... simply add an * to it e.g. gif*
