My moment of blondness

My main desktop machine has been doing some really wierd things the last few days.
It had that virusy look about it with things such as my 'default startup & shutdown sounds playing slowly, clipping, the startup process was taking quite a while longer than I care for, etc. I made sure my MSE was up to date, did a full scan,so on. All clean....
1 of my cpu cores was working out of sync with the way it always has done, so I decide either it is a crook cpu or possibly I might have some Windows files have become corrupted. I spend the best part of a day doing backups of all my data which I already had fully backed up anyways, but I just like to be sure when given the chance. I then decide to install a fresh windows beside my existing version rather than do a full reformat up front. While going through the new set up process, away it goes again with all the sounds playing up. This time the mouse is all but unuseable.
I pull the machine to bits thinking I might be up for a new cpu. The bloody cpu has fans n stuff all over it & I just didn't feel like pulling all that to bits this afternoon. So it just happens I have a couple of old ram cards lying around, so I swap them over.
Still with all the covers off, I boot up. Much to my surprise, away it all goes & is now running perfect.
I am left thinking 'DOH'.... why didnt I try that in the 1st place.... ( Probably because the ram I had only put into it about 4 or 5 months ago, so how could that be buggered.... )

Ahh well, on the bright side, I still have all my data unaffected & just now have a complete extra copy of Windows sitting on my drive as Windows.0. Plus I have some good backups now on my external drive totally uncompressed. :)

Didn't you get any bluescreen of sudden shutdowns?
That's usually what happens when there are problems with RAM.

Nope, just sounded like sound card had been smoking drugs....
This was a few weeks ago now & the old thing has not missed a beat since I put my old ram back in.
Reminds me, I took the ram back to the shop I bought it from, they were going to test & let me know but have not bothered.
So I must go & either get it replaced or take it back broken as is.
(They didn't wanna replace as I didnt have receipt & they have no intention of honoring the 'Lifetime warranty' it was supposed to have. Even though they know me & know I have sent quite a bit of work their way, which will no longer happen now if they don't come good for me) :)

... which is why I have been buying most of the kit I own at the same place, they have treated me more than well over the years when it came to replacements. And I had my fair share of broken parts...
