Does Visual Designer actually work in Linux?

I downloaded and installed the latest version of the Visual Designer in Arch Linux.

The Visual Designer opens and displays a Window0, but I am unable to put anything into the window. HELP does not work so I can't tell if I am using it correctly or not.

I've tried double-clicking on the Gadget buttons, single-clicking on them and dragging them into the window, but nothing works. They do "light up" when I click on them.

I chose Purebasic because it works in Linux and has a Visual Designer. If it isn't going to work, I'll have to consider moving to Lazarus and Pascal.

Hi WoodLark,

thanks for your question as I didn't know eather 'bout a VD for Linux ;)

besides - to place gadgets on Window0 you only 'select' the wanted gadget. Then click on Window0 (and hold it) where you want to place it and drag the mouse until to get the size you want.

Hope that's clear expressed.

good luck ~ Vera

addendum:
As for the HELP - looks like there is no extra vd-helpfile for Linux. There is one for WIN but it's in CHM-format and I think wouldn't open anyway. Still you could download it - Visual Designer.chm - and use it seperatly. (In case you can't open it, let me know and I'll decompress it to html for you)

Linux : Read the CHM-format install :

gnochm for gnome

or

kchmviewer for kde

Thanks Vera and Cookman!

I tried the method Vera described and it works (once I realized that the gadget is created with zero dimensions so you can't see it until you drag the mouse a little ways) :D .

I downloaded the help file, and will install gnochm since I use Gnome. :D

I have spent the afternoon playing with the Visual designer in Arch Linux (Gnome).

So far, I have observed the following behavior:

The grid cannot be made visible (although gadgets do appear to snap to the grid).

None of the keyboard shortcuts work. Everything has to be done with the mouse. Luckily the keyboard does work in the Properties Window, and works (somewhat) in the Code Window.

If I rename a gadget (or make any other change to it after it has been created), a new definition for the gadget is generated in the code, but the old definition is not deleted. I have to go in and manually delete it.

Well - I think you'll find several mischiefs around the Visual Designer, and have to cope with them.
Please see the thread DarkDragon posted above to get an idea about the situation (and maybe do a board search as well).

Unfortunately VD doesn't get a bit more attention and it all goes to PureBasic, which, I think too, is more important and reasonable on the whole.
To me the VD is a tool that can come in handy for a start or in between, and is not meant as major access to PureBasic.

Still you might get on with it, and in case you might also be interested in another tool (I only came across yesterday): Visual Generate Deluxe (to handle VDs common files)

@ Coolman
Thanks for your hints - with an older version of kchmviewer I finaly found one that works on my OS too.

Greetings ~ Vera

Yeah, wow, that worked - I couldn't figure out how to add objects either. This Linux version is really quite 'rustic' compared to the Windows version. :? Wonder why? It is certainly quite counter-intuitive... is that necessary? I'm running the Windows version in VirtualBox/XP and the whole UI is so slick, so clean, so easy to use.... what is up with that??? Linux so appears to be the red-headed step-child... :|

For example, resizing.

I click on the lower right-hand corner... and drag to the new size. Click again. Move the mouse, it hasn't accepted the new size, still resizing. Double-click. Still resizing. Right-click. Still resizing. This is bogus, this should stop. Is someone LOOKING at this UI???

I'm in Mint 13. A rock-stable OS... everything just works. Except PureBasic. Having HUGE issues, here... is 5 still in beta?

Right-click the Listbox object: the drop-down menu appears and disappears when you let up from the mouse button... WTF is up with THAT? Is is a Linux thing or can this be changed in the UI?

I think, you are using a virtual machine? Change the mouse-settings in the vm-config!
