New website/concept I've made...

For everything that's not in any way related to PureBasic. General chat etc...

New website/concept I've made...

Post by Joakim Christiansen »

Well, to quote my own site:
This site is basically to help people find and share information about ANY file or torrent! Imagine it like a wikipedia, but for files!

It does this by looking up the "hash value" of a file, a hash value (usually 32-48 characters) can be generated by the content of ANY file. And any file with the same content will generate the EXACT same value while the chances for two different files to generate the same value is extremely low. Therefore this sequence of characters can be used as an unique ID to identify a file!
More details about it here:
http://hashlookup.org/about.php

It is basically a site to lookup information about files and torrents! And for torrents one can even submit more "torrent related" information, like screenshots for example (if a video). Need a demonstration? Here:
http://hashlookup.org/index.php?hash=C9 ... 7287C09074

What has this to do with PureBasic?
Well, I posted this in off topic so I think it should be okay since most active users here "knows" me and there is nothing wrong talking about my projects.

And guess what?
The Hash-Lookup software available for Windows, Linux and MacOS was actually written in PureBasic! So feel free to download the source code if you want:
http://hashlookup.org/lookup_tool/hash- ... source.zip

I don't know if this concept will get popular or what, but at least I think that it is a good idea and I would definitely enjoy being able to lookup any file. And since I post about this here I would also like some feedback from you guys (know that I love you all).

So...? Any comments? :D
And yeah, please test the site (and software) and help me nail down bugs...

And if anyone wants to compile a Leopard (Mac) version of it then please send it to me! Since I can only create a Snow Leopard version. :/

I really like the clean design of your site.

Good site, but sorry to say it's by no means the first. Bitzi.com and other sites have done hash lookups on files for many years now.

Thank you!
That was actually one of my goals with this project, to have something easy to the eyes and easy to use.

Oh, I didn't know about Btizi.com. I can't say they're too successful then (if I haven't heard about them I mean). But hmm, it actually looks like they have a lot of users.

Well... I'll just have to make something more appealing than Btizi then. Maybe something which doesn't suggest "related" Amazon products or eBay auctions for a start...

EDIT:
Actually I take back what I said before about it not letting you download any of the torrents, because I will actually add support for magnet links. As a test to see the response kinda... :o

Careful you don't end up like the other torrent link/search sites will end up. Take a look at Pirate Bay, they had the same basic concept and their defense was that the were only a search engine like google or anyone else. The defense didn't work. Others are under legal attack right now from the various anti-piracy and copyright infringment groups and some people associated are facing jail time or financial ruin as a result. All of them had the same basic concept.
The advantage of a 64 bit operating system over a 32 bit operating system comes down to only being twice the headache.

Google is your friend, and KISS.. There's no need for this in my opinion.
