I'm testing Norwegian 3G network speeds

Well, as the title implies. I have been testing different 3G "broadband" operators in Norway, so you don't have to.
I started this the summer of 2009, so I have been doing this about 6 months now.
The results below are the average score from the providers I have tested.
I have NOT taking into conderation the price for the different providers, as they are pretty much so similar.
Code: Select all
Company Download Upload Note
ICE 508 kbit/s 78 kbit/s USB Modem from ICE
NetCom 881 kbit/s 44 kbit/s USB Modem from NetCom
Chess 987 kbit/s 863 kbit/s USB Moden from Chess.no
Chess 1 087 kbit/s 926 kbit/s Acer Aspire One D250 with built-in 3G modem from Chess.no
Chess uses the same network as NetCom, but because of better and more modern hardware AND more often updated software and drivers, their speed is better as can be seen.
I haven't tried Telenor yet, but if someone has a USB 3G modem from Telenor, please post your speed results here.
NB: I have used the Speedometer from ITavisen.no on all tests.
All tests have been performed at around the same time at 1 am on sunday night.

Pity you weren't polling for international 3g networks as here in NZ Telecom's new XT network is pretty much 0 kb's second, lots of service failures and service outages

Cant help you with European services GeoTrail, but here is a copy of my Wireless BB results here in Aus..
This test was done using a Huwaie E169 or however you spell it modem with no external antenna used. etc

That's a pretty good download speed Baldrick.
Here is mine using built in 3G on my Acer Aspire One D250
I have the same USB modem for my NetCom subscription. It's the white one right? Little USB dongle? Well, it's not that little actually hehehe. Not compared to the new ones out there.

Mine is black, but I do believe they came in both black & white, but yes thats it.
I would like to get your upload speeds though. That would be nice for streaming video...

I bet it's your network provider that is capping your upload speed.

That would not surprise me in the least. On the good side though, I do have a 2nd usb modem which is a prepaid unit connected through the Biggest Really horrible isp in Aus. It runs quite well, but costs around 10x as much money to run simply by virtue of the fact that they charge much harder than any wounded bull I can think of.
I am atm looking at taking on a new business as a distributor for voip here in Aus, so getting cheap reliable bandwidth is of much interest to me for now. I am thinking atm of driving this E169 through a router so I can connect to a voip analogue telephone adaptor to see how reliably it will work over a period of a time for people here who do not wish to have any fixed landline & associated rentals, etc.

Here is the result for my home network

I currently have Fiber cable from BKK and have the 15/15 Mb/s deal. But in the coming summer, I can upgrade to 400/400 Mb/s

lol GeoTrail, I won't even bother posting results of my fixed BB speed as comparitively I am getting around 1.5Mb / 0.2Mb & that is pretty much as good as it's likely to get for quite some time here. ( Pretty much a case of Aus has 1 big carrier which our govt sold off & floated on the stock markets which has all but left us with what is in my opinion extremely poor BB services with this big fish strangling everything that doesn't suit them, while they are busy charging about 10x the prices that the bandwidth is worth. ) - We supposedly have a new Fibre carrier network happening which will allow other private organisations get bandwidth, but again this same big fish is doing everything it can to strangle it.

That sucks big time. Luckily, here in Norway we have lots and lots of different ISP's and they are all fighting for customers, and so the price is pretty low due to that fact, which off course is great for customers

On a lighter note GeoTrail, I received a notification from my isp last night informing me of an impending increase of $5.00 / month for my internet access, along with some options to upgrade my plan being that I am a long term client. I took a look at the currently available plans & managed to find 1 which was still witin my data needs at the same 1.5Mb speed for $5.00 / month less than I am currently paying, so am now $5.00 / month better off. On top of this, I found they have now made local area direct indial numbers available for my local area, so I have now also changed my voip number over to a local area number so I no longer appear to be in the middle of Sydney.
To top this off, my fixed line carrier called me a couple of weeks ago to see if I was happy with their service, which when I grumbled enough about them forcing me to stay on a plan $10.00 / month more than I should be paying just to keep my internet connection active, they allowed me to move back to the cheaper plan without any disconnection & payed reconnection of my adsl service.
So in the last month I have somehow managed to knock a cool $15.00 / month off my communications bills......

Just as a matter of interest GeoTrail, did this 400/400 option become available to you in your country yet?
I am actually quite interested as we here in Aus are atm in the process of having a 100/100 fibre service set up Australia wide which has been causing quite some debate in politics the last months.

Hi Baldrick. Yeah the 400/400 MBit option is available now, but it is seriously expensive.

Heya GeoTrail,
Sorry to bug, but again just as a matter of interest what do you think it might cost for you to have a plan with a speed using this service choked out at around 100/100 now?

No bugging at all

100 Mbit is priced at 1 990 kr per month, and 400 Mbit is priced at 5 990 kr per month. Which off course is ridiculous.
I have the 15/15 package with the basic TV package and phone and it costs 449 NOK per month.
