Antivirus XP 2010 -- a gift from Flash Ads

Post by Rook Zimbabwe »

So I am scrolling the PB forums and i get that annoying UPDATE FLASH message popup... I [ALT]+F4 and close teh window...

I then get a Zone Alarm popup asking for permission for AV.exe to access the web...

I am thinking WTF??? Avast has already updated today... I click on DENY... it comes up a second time... I shut down IE and unplug my net connection physically.

I access command prompt to try to force a few tools I have to run... ALL TYPING CHARACTERS are now ^A ^B etc capslock or no...

Restart the computer... Uing the FORCE SHUTDOWN method...

guess what???

I now have AntiVirus XP 2010 all over my computer and Avast is not running in full mode... there are processes in the background and something called av.exe in my program manager...

I am still unconnected to the net... physically... no wires plugged in and my PC has no wireless ability...

YET!

I get warnings popup and a SECURITY CENTER popup tellingme I am infected with everything... I also have malicious programs accessing the internet connection (I suppose psychic code is now in vogue!)

I use my laptop to access the internet and cut this crap off and do a download of the new MALWAREBYTES library (Malwarebytes won't run until I kill av.exe)

I am up now... still testing system...

I have no idea what ad was appearing but itt flashed a great deal!!!

A gift from PB Forums
It is just stupid blaming the PureBasic forum before you really know what happened!
And what is it with people thinking Google ads contains viruses? Get a grip.
I like logic, hence I dislike humans but love computers.

Use a Flash-blocker or at least update to the latest version of Flash, maybe you should even use SandBoxie?
Adobe has lately been plagued with security problems.

Add's that are linked in from some outside provider is a problem in many places, it's a general problem and not a PureBasic issue.

Rook, you don't half make me laugh sometimes... the other week you are there saying how stupid one of your friends were and how many hours it took you to clean their system of malware. Then here you are... grumbling over how your system got infected! No offence, but, start practising what you preach eh?

You tell your friend to run sandboxie, and you obviously think you are too 1337 to do the same. You tell him/her not to use IE, but there you are running IE. Jesus, if you are going to run around in a bar, while you are drunk, with your underwear round your ankles, with "I need a good F***ing!" tattooed on your ass, then you are asking for trouble aren't you :P

But the most stupid thing you have done so far is blame the PB forums for your infection...

Are you not aware that some malware DELAYS making it's presence known, specifically to hide where it was downloaded from? I could really go on a rant right now, but to be honest... I really cant be bothered.

Damn, I had my underwear around my head, no wonder I didn't get anywhere!

I'm certainly not going to do that whilst I'm sober that's for sure! :)

Now, drunk... well, anything goes in that case!

The really sad part is...

All the talent used to create crap like AntiVirus XP 2010 is being used to write malicious code rather than to write something genuinely usefull.

Thats because that "malicious code " is making them millions of dollars a year (collectively), much more than "something genuinely usefull" would. And it does this because it preys (mostly) on the less savvy which outnumber the more savvy by about a thousand to one. Sad, yes, ...financially reqarding, most definately unfortunately. So its not sad to those who do such things, they enjoy the fruits of their ill gotten gains with never a twinge of remorse.
The advantage of a 64 bit operating system over a 32 bit operating system comes down to only being twice the headache.

At one time I seriously considered writing my own virus. It would be great, sitting behind my own PC, spying on other people, blackmailing them, and making money on sending millions of useless emails and using my army of thousands of bots to bring down anyone that I did not like (or didn't like enough to say 'no' when offered certain financial... euh... 'advantages').

But... I got over it.

Why would I want to waste all that time on sneakily making money by being a horror, lurking in the woodworks terrorizing the innocent pron collector?

I just, morally, did not have the strength to carry that cross. I just could not stand the thought of the thousands, no millions of people, whose digital lifes would be destroyed by the great and hidden puppetmaster.

It just wouldn't do.

So, I decided to become a better person. Make something of my life. Which is why I've set my eyes on a less controversial occupation, an ambition that would not only bring statisfaction but even greater rewards than being a spammer or a virus creator. Something that definitely will change the world.

Yes. I've committed myself to total world domination. I think I'm getting the 'evil laugh' quite right by now. And don't worry, my secret headquarters will not feature a self destruct button, nor will I explain my sinister plans to captured ever-do-gooders before I leave them alone to some exotic form of, well, end-of-life moment from which they inevitably would escape. (Yeah, I know my classics.)

So, bow to me! (And buy my new anti virus tool, hey, I need to gather some cash first before I can build that secret headquarters...)
