Is there even a 128bit x86 CPU existing
I mean 64bit is pretty young for x86, if you consider how long it takes until it is used by the main stream.
Think about how long 32bit was existing befor it became main stream. x86 got 32bit on the 80386 CPU.
And think about 64bit. There are still many users with 64bit CPU's but only using a 32bit OS.

I don't think we should worry about 128bit for now.

32bit is there till Win95, and of Vista there are still 32bit versions...
so, what do you think how many versions it will take to offer the first 128bit OS?

You are so right. But this only a statement like: AmstradCPC is still an 8bit machine.
Yes it is...but there are also the possibility to install XP/Vista/Windows7/Linux, etc.. as a 64bit OS variant.

So: You are right with your statement...but this is not the whole truth!

Even a Pentium 3 have 128bit registers for SSE, still it is a 32bit CPU.

Damn, 64bit is still only new. 128bit can wait a few years or more.

128 bits won't be for the main processor, i can't see any advantage in it when 64 bits can already have a very very large address space.

Ars was a little behind the times. Microsoft layed out this plan more then three years ago.

The majority of software is still 32 bit. 128 bit will be sort of senseless in a way until software producer companies catch up and actually produce true 128 bit software, right now they are having a hard time converting to true 64 bit development.

Agreed, unless I made a mistake somewhere I estimate a 64bit register able to address 18.4 million terabytes. I can't see the point of investing in making this larger for now. Who's going to need it for the foreseeable future with computer memory sizes typically well under a dozen gig?

Yes, there are 128 bit chips out there and modular core designs as well that virtualize 128...

They can cook an egg in under 1 1/2 minutes!

I recall having the same discussion with my dad then the 286s came out... My position was that you would never NEED more than 8 bit / 64k memory... maybe 128k MAX so why would anybody NEED 16bit/640+ ??? Computers work fine now!

As I sit in front of my work computer running 7 on 64bit AMD x4 with 4gigs... or my home computer AMD x2 with 4gig!!! (Running XP Pro!) I wonder where that idea went!

It's no discussion IF it will come but WHEN it will come. I'd say latest 2015 we'll see announcements crop up about the next release of Windows, this time 128 bits. It's going to happen.

I think the first 'real' 32 bits windows was NT4.0 released back in 1996 or so, about 5 years later everyone went Win2K / WinXP and we all accepted 32 bits. 2005 gave us WinXP 64, so in 2010 the whole world will be running 64 bits... sort of... MicroSoft hopes

1995 first 32 bits 2000 all 32 bits
2005 first 64 bits 2010 all 64 bits
2015 first 128 bits 2020 all 128 bits

So, according to my very scientific research, every 10 years we'll double register size. One day, this is going to be known as BluezNL's law

I still have a 486 with 24 mb of memory (wow!) running Windows 95. Funny how it's still faster than some of the latest and greatest super whiz-bang computers out now.

Still runs Doom II and Sim City 2000 like a dream!
