Hi all!

Small problem --> small tool :-)

RunAsAdmin is a Freeware tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista, that allows to run other programs with administrative privileges. It is especially well suited for use on portable devices such as USB drives. Installation is not required.

Usage

Code: Select all

RunAsAdmin <program> [options]
[options] means here possible options of the program which is going to be launched. RunAsAdmin itself doesn't have any command-line options.

Some programs can only be run with administrative privileges.
  • You dislike having to remember which programs require this?
  • You don't want to switch to an administrator account each time?
  • On an account with normal user privileges, you want these programs to show a dialog box which allows to choose an administrator name and to enter the corresponding password? And on the other hand, when you are already logged in as an administrator, no annoying dialog box should be displayed?
  • Under Windows 2000/XP, you don't want to create different shortcuts for administrators as opposed to normal users for this purpose?
  • You want this to work under different Windows versions also with programs on USB drives, e.g. in combination with a portable start menu such as PStart?
Then RunAsAdmin is the right program for you.

Any feedback is highly appreciated.

Hi luis,

thanks for your post and the link. I'm sorry for my delay in replying.

This little tool does not do something really new, I just thought it can help making things a little more convenient.

I must admit, when I wrote the tool and the above text, I was not aware that it's possible on Windows XP to right-click a program file or a shortcut, and then choose "Run as" (and the same on Windows 2000 in combination with pressing SHIFT). :(

However, since I'm lazy, I don't want having to remember which programs require administrative privileges, and which don't. So my idea was, to give those programs itself the possibility to ask for elevated privileges when required ... without the need to create different shortcuts for administrators as opposed to normal users. And I wanted to use such a convenient solution also on my USB flash drive, in combination with PStart. PStart also provides a "RunAs" option, but it's the same situation as mentioned above: I have to remember myself, which programs require elevated privileges and which don't.

Well, all this is no big deal anyway, maybe it's a little crazy to write a program for this purpose. :D

PS: I've re-written the documentation in the first post, and I hope it's clearer now.
