Better is.
Linux version is still Alpha. ("AlphaSND" -> now i know )
Amiga version has nothing to do with Windows version.

Its still reality.
Examples from users in the forum dont work
after a new release. So this guy didnt say
something thats not true.

I don't find this review very interessting as it doesn't speak at all of the possibility given to coder but just some aspects external to programming (name of functions (!?) and code incompatibility after each release). Anyway, PB is a young langage and I think it's better to change some commands than live with them forverer. Each new version is given free of charge but the coder can stay with an old version if he don't want change anything. PB is an alive langage, which grow and changes, for the best. With v3.20, some changes will be necessary (should be the last, all is clean for now. Later release willn't impose new changes).

I thought the review was quite positive (although pretty shallow) I like PB - it does everything I want it to do. I think he makes an important and valid point, though in that many of the PB examples simply do not work with the current version. Also PBs documentation is mostly pretty sketchy and does not do justice to what seems to be a pretty darn good language.

I guess Fred has a difficult balancing act to perform - provide regular updates for the *power* programmers or provide documentation for Mr Average programmer (ie: me).

Personally, I'd like to see Fred take a couple of months off PB development and get the documentation up-to-date...

It documents the commands and the syntax to use them.
There are also examples in the example folder showing them in use.

If you want to learn how to program in Basic, there are many books out there.
If you want to learn the Windows API, visit msdn.microsoft.com (or get a book)
If you want to code using ASM, there are also books and websites.

I'm not sure it is Fred's job to teach people how to program,
...although I could be wrong

For this the bugs have to be eliminated first and the users wishes have to be build in the core language (doubles... and so on)!
So while Fred is writing the doc's the users can finish what they have started instead of waiting for it...

Anyway, I thought some users began to make a nice doc?
Have they gave up?

The major problem is that a pretty good coder is mainly not a preatty good teacher.
Because he knows to much and the reader don't...

If you look at books like:
'Beginning Programming for Dummys'
you will see that the writer is probably a good coder but not a genius!
He doesn't have to. He only needs to understand what's going on and write it down in a way that everybody understands it.

So the main problem is ... Fred is a genius

That's why the docs are the way they are...

My point is that the PB community misses examples rather than large documentation because most of us are developpers and often bad docs readers.

I prefer to let Fred do his job as well and to post some good programs for the community which will certainly help everybody to go on and maybe Fred or anybody else to contribute to the PB documentation.
