Hey all!

Me and my girlfriend are going to Paris in a few weeks, it'll be my first time on a plane, first time abroad, and the first 'proper' holiday I've had So I'm quite looking forward to it!

So before we brave the metro I wondered if anyone knows of any good places to visit? As in smaller, quirky, hidden little gems as opposed to big run of the mill tourist attractions

I've longed to laze outside a Parisienne café ever since I first played Broken Sword many moons ago

- Place Fürstenberg
- Jardin du Luxembourg
- Le Louvre (of course)
- L'ile saint louis
- Pont des Arts
- Le Marais

Les Buttes-Chaumont ( Ligne 7 bis )
Le cimtière du Père-Lachaise ( Ligne 2,3 ) Yes, a graveyard.. But u know, many peoples come in it, walk arround.. And.. MmMmh.. Rest in peace..
Many many great names have been buried there .. :p

Montmartre absolutly !

You can find pleasants bars at Rue Vieille du Temple and near streets ( it's Le Marais )
(Beware if you put your feet in Rue des Rosiers, it's a gay territory x), "but" veeery biutyfull )

You can find very fine places and littles bars and fine restaurants not very expensive at Menilmontant and Rambuteau !

Trocadeo is fine.. at night.. but... full of petits bourgeois .. :roll: , and their all is very expensive !

Les quais de la seine, at night, near Jussieu, here with some luck, you can find spontaneous parties in the "arenes" , some times it's totaly empty , sometimes it's mad , sometimes it's "glauque" ... well ... But empty : It's a place to see !

Thing to do is just walking, walking, to a famous place from another.. And you will see ..

Next time you wanna go to France, replace « a few weeks » with « a few months ». So, you could see other things that a city !

For example, « Envoie ta copine en l'air chez les Fromages qui puent »

(If you want to move in France for the same cost as visiting Paris, you could use covoiturage - I haven't the english word = car sharing - . Use only official site for safety)

But, for Paris, you have this.

Trocadeo is fine.. at night.. but... full of petits bourgeois .. , and their all is very expensive !

Montmartre is a definite, we're going to check out the Eiffel tower on the first night and also the catacombs at some point... Our hotel does have Trocadero in the name And I think we're going to be in the Passy district which is rather expensive so I hear... the Euro isn't too good against the pound so I'm hoping my spending money stretches

It's my girlfriends birthday on the day after we get there so I was hoping to find somewhere romantic (shouldn't be hard in Paris ) to take her... ah I'll see!

at least, try the Pommes Frittes with Mayonnaise, it's really different from english chips, even from "French fries",
and the Mayo is different from any fries- or hamburger-sauce you get in England or US...

oh, and be careful when looking for a big bap to put ham or cheese on it:
most big baps in France are sweet, maybe even sweeter than croissants.
(I know it, I had a sweet bap with ham and cheese once.... )

The last time I was in Paris I went to the bistro Le Bamboche. The card I have says the address is: 15 rue de Babylone, 7th arr ... It is behind a department store and near the Metro Sèvres-Babylone.

Mon - Fri only but it was FANTASTIC!!!! it is small and not entirely prosaic in appearance, but the food that escapes that kitchen is some of the best I have ever put in my mouth.

My wife had the Oyster Ice Cream as an appetizer (recommended by a friend) and loved it. Price was about 40.00e a head, but worth every euro!!!

The other place we ate (at 2AM!) was La Poule au Pot 9 rue Vauvilliers, 1st arr... We got this one from Lets Go Paris book... order the onion soup and a glass of fruity red wice and a bueberry tart at 2Am and watch the stars...

it's very common in central europe, some like it more some less.
here in germany, mayo is more common on "pommes" than ketchup, though both is avaliable.
very typical german is also "red-white", with mayo and ketchup, but side by side, not mixed.

As for European cuisine... I had my first proper bratwurst from a German stall at the Manchester Jazz festival a few weeks back, oh it was good

Pommes Frittes with whatever on it are Belgian of course.

An American soldier called it French fries when he was stationed in the south-east region of Belgium, where they speak French.

Now the whole English speaking world has this wrong

...and we all know how Pommes Frittes were invented, don't we?
