download the actual PB4.2 package and install it into a new directory.

what do you mean by the "actual one". Didn't I already download the right one. It was the only one.

first: sorry, I missed that it is the Linux forum...
under Windows an untidy install can cause such errors,
e.g. relics of older installations when updating into the same folder, etc.
thus I meant to make a new download and install into a new folder.
but I dunno if this maybe relevant for the Linux version....

What's the error?
What version of Linux are you using?

I never read the error message "Okay I just can't get it to work"

.
Did you install it like the readme says?
export PATH...
export PUREBASIC_HOME...
etc.
is your purebasic/compilers/fasm chmod +x?
Are your purebasic files within a different directory, which belongs to another usergroup than your users' usergroups? Or does it belong to a different user?

LOL
I suspect he was meaning the "current one".
For German speakers, "actual" is a so called
false friend:
There is a German word "aktuell" which does not translate to "actual", but to "current".

It's really hard to help, when you don't tell us, what you've done and what your system really says.
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
What System do you have? Which CPU?
Which Kerel? Which Desktop/Windowmanager? Which extension (Beryl/Compiz/XGL,...)?
Dark Dragon also asked for such infos.
If you do not help us, we can't help you.
edit: I do not suppose a bug, but wrong usage/unproper installation.

[necroposter mode]
The same issue.
Can't compile any sources, IDE just throws "[07:34:34] [COMPILER] Assembler error!".
Tried PB 3.31 and 3.41
Fresh install
All depencies are good.
export PATH...
Done.
export PUREBASIC_HOME...
Done.
fasm chmod +x
Yes
Purebasic is unpacked into home directory
/home/michael/Purebasic_4.xx
