Hello!

I have been looking for a composite video (yellow RCA jack) to S-Video converter/adapter, but have not found any products that convert composite video to S-Video (as opposed to S-Video to composite video) or products that ship to Finland. So after further Googling I gave up and I think I am going to put up a custom homebrew composite video to S-Video adapter. I did not find the pin outs for the plugs, so is anyone willing to help here? Also, how much will a composite video to S-Video converter/adapter degrade video quality compared to a native S-Video output from the device?

PS: I have some developer boards here and I am quite skilled in soldering stuff onto PCBs. Last but not least if it is really needed, I can even hook up a custom PCB (etching the board is difficult but I do manage doing it ^_^).

By the way, as I can not find the information anywhere, does anyone know if it is possible to insert auxiliary audio plugs (stereo RCA, usually white and red) into a S/PDIF RCA jack? I have been thinking of buying a "combinator" plug like the "Video Game Adapter" that comes with Creative Inspire T3000: http://us.creative.com/products/product ... category=4
Note that the "Video Game Adapter" is a 2xRCA->1x3.5mm adapter, I am going to buy a 2xRCA->1xRCA adapter for combining stereo sound into one plug, but since the sources are in auxiliary format, I am not sure if it is possible to insert the plug into a S/PDIF RCA jack like the one found on a Creative CT4660 (add-on digital I/O card for Creative Sound Blaster Live!).

While we are on the subject, can anyone help me with the decision between a Hauppauge Impact VCB (bttv) and Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 (ivtv)? Both are supported under GNU/Linux too which is why I put them into consideration. All I need is to get composite video (in PAL format) rendered/streamed to my TFT display directly. I do not know much about the devices myself and after endlessly looking on Google I still can not find any reviews on these cards, but as they seem to be cheap I have been thinking of buying them (and they use a single PCI slot without an external connector bay that takes up space on my desk).

As far as I understand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF and related links, it is not possible to combine auxiliary audio with digital audio directly, but there seems to be an adapter you might have a look at: Creative Sound Blaster MP3+ (sorry, no good englisch/soumi link this time).

Since it will be hard to find someone with both TV-devices, you might start at http://www.videohelp.com/capturecards to search for tests

I am Korean, but for the record I know/speak fluently Korean, Swedish, Finnish, German and English. So it is usually not a problem for me to find information, but sometimes I just do not know what to put in the Google search box @_@

I will come back to the audio question later, but it seems that the Hauppauge Impact VCB relies on software while the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 150 has hardware MPEG2 capabilities... For hooking up a gaming device or VCR is hardware MPEG2 really needed? Does it in any case provide better picture quality or does it leave the CPU cool by taking the load on it? I have a fairly powerful system (Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 overclocked @ 2.0Ghz CPU and 1Gb DDR2 667Mhz CL5 RAM) and as I am new to these things I would like to know if anyone has ever experienced "slowdown" on their PC when using video capture cards.

Well, ATM I have nothing better to do and I can be the hell of a nice guy, if the time is right, no matter who's at the other side
On the other side, I'm often sitting in front of my projects and wait for some solutions to fly by.
As they rarely do, I appreciate the support I get from th PB-boards - and pay back where-/whenever I can.
And I try to "make friends" as I may need a song/sound for an upcoming PB-project
Since both, video and audio are/were interests of mine, I also had some trouble a few years ago to put all the pieces together for capturing Vinyl and TV.
Even coming from Amiga/BeOS/Zeta, I landed at M$-country; Linux has never been a way for me - please, keep this in mind, when reading my answers or recommendations :roll:

FMPOV, your system is well enough to use the cheapest TV-cards for analog video around, the old Hauppauge WIN-TVs. There are tons of tools to use these cards for capturing, in M$-world I would recommend VirtualDub. And here in Germany I can get them for nearly nothing (or 5€ )

I would still recommend to capture (nearly) lossless, using Huffyuv or MJPEG for video and PCM for audio. Second step would be to convert to the format of your choice using the tool of your choice. This way there's nearly no chance for asyncron audio in the movies , even if it takes a little bit more time.
