i voted for nr.5
i find irene's (nr.2) not bad too.
nr.1 would be ok.
i don't like nr.3, looks boring and too MS-like

If you name this "pure" messenger, I recommend 1.

3 is like MSN Messenger a lot, may confuse some guys although it looks the most professional.

I know 3 is a rip, I read the other posts  , thing is though it looks like the sort of icon that people are used too. It does look a bit microsoft-like but is that a bad thing, millions of people can't be wrong! :)

It is if Microsoft sues you for copying their design. Seriously.

I voted for 5, because it's very personal and also looks professional.

1) is easily identifiable - its familiar ('cos of the smiley - truly an iconic image) yet (I think) is original - really a great icon / logo.

2) If I were a regular user - I'd have no idea what this is supposed to represent - also assumes the user is an English speaker.

3/4/5) are good but easily lost on your desktop and quickly forgotten - too subtle and too much like other icons.

Here's my translation of the bubble idea:

It is far from complete and I'm working on a new more fresh and original idea..

yikes, didnt realise how alike no. 3 was.
but since its not my original design, can we still get into trouble for it?
i have no idea how long the linux one (the 2 ppl in the bubble) has been around...
