My wife's been asking me for a laptop for her birthday and at this price I just can't pass this up.

May even be worth getting two, but they do mention they'll have more models available in the coming months...

If I were you, I wouldn't order it!! I'd say there is atleast an 80% probability that this is a scam!! For those of you who read Swedish here are some links that discuss this:

If it's too good to be true, then it usually is!

Then again, that nigerian mail you got could be the first real deal, and that gold chain you were offered on the street corner could be the first real gold sold like that! Likewise, this could be the real deal! We will not know for sure until the first computers are, or aren't, delivered.

Interesting. The specs sound a lot better than the "One Laptop Per Child" project (and that project's price has blown out from the original fanfare price)

if you get one, let me know what it's like please. I could use a spare here.

I googled and found only one site here with any news about it (in English as I can't read Swedish).

Well the OLPC has a slower processor but it has awesome hardware and software features currently no other Laptop has.
First it uses only very little energy (about 2 Watt in normal usage)
Then it is capable of creating huge meshnetworks over wireless with other olpcs and it can route Internet access through them without heavy configuration, it can also serve as a node of the mesh with only the wlan adapter running to save even more power. It can be used in a very energy efficient Ebook mode and has a high resolution display suitable for outdoor use.
It also comes with a highly flexible power supply unit so it can be recharged with unusual power sources such as car batteries or pulling dynamos.

I bought one anyway, so if it's a scam i'll tell you. I hope it's not but i guess you never know until you try. I'll let you know in a few weeks if anything has arrived.

I wanted to see what the shipping charges would be to the US (Ohio) so I went through the ordering process far enough to get the shipping charges added. To my surprise they are Free via what they call "Scandinavia" vendor shipping which I have not heard of here in the US. In my mind this makes it even more questionable since I don't see how they can sell it for a profit at $150 let alone ship it for free. I also see they don't accept PayPal as a payment option (but do take major credit cards).

It seems to me that it is either a scam or they won't be in business for long with this pricing model.

Sounds nice in theory but I've just read (amongst other disturbing news) that apart from the first price blowout (was supposed to be around $100.00) that it's now around $150.00 (and possibly going up again) and they are going to be selling it commercially for $350.00 to cover the cost of making it cheaper for the underprivileged education sector (I see a possible pricing upward sweep again and again in the near future).

Do you think they will ever get this to market or was it too much idea and not enough money behind it?

This other one might not be as powerful but it seems (and I could be wrong) that they will actually get it to market before the OPLC gets into the shops.

Well I guess it's to late for OLPC to not get into the market, production at Quanta has already begun, they've shipped 4 development versions and supplied several hundred systems to schools for testing already, there is not realy any going back and I guess the 350 price tag is not to cover the 150 price for unpriviliged folks but to get it even lower. That said if I were a father I wouldn't hesitate a minute before getting my children an OLPC the fact they can't run to many violent games on it (except for maybe Doom) alone is a good point and the design is awesome as well.
Edit: Anther important point is the fact OLPC has software geared towards education rather than a standard fedora Linux, so I don't see computers like this messing in to much in the same market as OLPC.

Good point. Kids will generally run anything they find unless the hardware cannot do it.

Oh, I heard about OLPC also! The GUI / Desktop is written in Python. I don't know, if this is still true.
This aims to get children also into programming. They shall be able to change, extend, ... the GUI and it's functionality. I read a developer blog that ment, it is possible to always watch the code of the current app. With another key you can reset the gui, if you crash the GUI.

Another thing I heard from the Python-Community: the OLPC Team has already some contracts with some goverments. IIIRC it will only be availiable over some government offices (I don't know the english word yet) and is "sponsored" by the government edu-finanzes as well. So it can be, that half the price will be charged by government.


Don't know if this is all true, but at least it sounds good and I like the Idea as well as the project.
