Between the devil and the deep blue sea

The devil being Windows and the deep blue being Linux.
For a variety of reasons I want to get away from windows - so badly it almost hurts.
The difficulty is that I am more familiar with windows than with linux. In addition (and much as it pains me to admit it) windows is much more user friendly. I do not have to be a guru to do things with pure (and net-related development) on windows.
Given that I currently spend over 12 hours a day 7 days a week on my main (non-programming) business interests I have very little time left to learn anything that is too time consuming. Or even slightly time consuming.
So switching to linux is proving difficult. Everything - the OS through installing PureBasic to distributing own apps - is a mystery to me, with hidden pitfalls.
Also - would the
real Linux please stand up? I am tired of DL'ing everyone's latest you-beaut release and trying to find a, um, user interface that works.
So ......
... is there an OS out there (other than mac) that:
- supports web development?
handles purebasic?
is easy to install?
is easy to use (as in installing apps, both 3rd party and own)?
is free?
Something I can get up and running easily, use quickly, through knowing "just enough"?
Thanks to anyone who provides an winning answer!

i already started a big post for answer, but always ended up in typing 'open shell do this, or on ubuntu, just klick...' - so kales answer already answered everything
if you already tried ubuntu and were not happy for what reason ever, give opensuse a try, it's very easy to install and based on kde other than gnome. maybe thats more of your type

(I had a bad start with Ubuntu and stayed a long time with Mandriva, wich I still like a lot, but meanwhile I LOVE UBUNTU!)

one of the reasons why Linux isn't that successful is,
that the fan's of the different distros fight each other instead of fighting microsoft....

But that's what makes GNU/Linux so interesting
Down with Ubuntu! Down with Ubuntu!

he asked for a linux, easy to use (for the windows user)... you have noticed that?
but just in case you want a flame war:
if i would like to use a linux where i had to wait hours for a simple firefox update to compile, i would not go for the cheap copy, i would go for t2/rock linux, the original

Ubuntu does not make it easy to install 3rd party applications, which he asked for.

No. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong. The closest is BeOS/Zeta, which was both easy to use and install. But they are sort of out of business. And eComStation can't run PureBasic.

Well, everything except publishing your Purebasic apps is fairly easy on both Ubuntu and other distros. It will take some getting used to which makes it sometimes much harder for Windows power users than for normal computer users. My mom doesn't even notice wether she uses my Linux box, a Mac or the Windows system except that I keep getting angry when I need to help her with Windows
Btw: After some time getting used to, Linux and Unix in general are a lot easier than Windows. I can't even go back now, everytime I need to use a Windows system it gets me in trouble.
-Sometimes the computer just stops working (maybe my anti Windows karma) happend at least 2 times in the last 6 months.
-Sometimes I find myself trying to get things done the Unix way which doesn't work and I end up starting a Terminal to connect to my Linux server so I can do things my way and installing software on Windows normaly results in a realy bad mood.

Name another current OS for the PC which is easier to use than Ubuntu? I guess you could go Apple Mac but you'll need another credit card for software.

Then why are you bringing these to the discussion? They are utterly useless.
There's no way around the fact that if you want to move away from Windows it has to be Linux, and IMHO Ubuntu (or maybe Mandriva) is best for beginners.

Ubuntu ist
not easy to use. Everyone claiming this is - sorry - just a liar.
Really easy to use distributions are (links inside):
OpenSUSE
Mandriva
Linspire/Freespire
