Vista first impression.. it sucks..

Just unwrapped my new PC with Vista on it, and my initial impressions of Vista is that it's
just like an American MM$ company has occupied it, and stick its nose into almost everything I try
to do with it..

Much worse than I expected, and I hope someone takes them down soon (=splits the company). It
wuold have ben much better if it came with a clean, safe OS on it, not this monolithic piece
of 'trying to be everything to everyone' piece of code Windows has grown into beeing lately.

Anyways, it will be interesting to check out PB programming and Vista, and I hope pb 4.1 will
be out of beta soon :)

BTW, the PC is a Lenovo 3000 V100 with Vista 'Business Edition' on it.

My recomendation....

Go into the hardware manager and note the hardware that's in the PC (for drivers).

Then format the thing and put Windows XP on it.

I will more than likely upgrade to Vista, but definitely not before service pack one is released....

I remember when I upgraded to Windows 2000, it was pretty "shakey" until they released service pack 1, then it got pretty solid.

I suspect Vista will be the same so I'm waiting...

so beware DRM
Strange that you mentioned DRM, since I read a five page article
on Vista DRM in the Sweedish fish-wrap 'DATOR MAGAZIN' today, and it was quite disturbing, to be polite.

As for waiting to upgrade to Vista, if you buy a new PC today you get Vista so thats it.

Eww Ubuntu! The Linux that Sucks (tm)
If Ubuntu wouldn't be so f**ked up (devs mod the packages a lot!) and they would have a nicer community (I got bashed off there for no reason) and better spiritual energy (admins co-operate with spammers!).. I would probably use it.

Debian FTW!!

A few years! Are you not aware how long it takes the corporate world to make any change of this magnitude. Most of the 'year 2000' crisis was corporations converting cobol from the 70's and 80's.

Windows will be around for much much longer than a few years.

what language you try to imitate with this?

...go back beyond your stone on mars... ;)

PS:
something like "go get a life" is a serious insultment, it breaks the border of joking in a forum.

I agree windows will be around for years. But windows doesn't change no-matter what the version. Look how recently Microsoft is playing catch-up to all the other big PC developers. In almost all cases microsoft is copying ideas.

Look how far ubuntu has come in only a few years. There is a reason why dell has choosen it above all other distros for preloading on new machines. Ubuntu has a clear goal of where it wants to be, but for it to be a major player they need to get hardware manufacturers on board to write drivers. Thats what is holding them back.

I'm not a big windows fan and certainly don't want to start a flame war - but Windows WILL be around. It will survive.

Corporations don't particularly like Microsoft, but they have an immense amount of change to undertake to displace windows. And they'll only do it if it can make some significant difference in their 'bottom line'.

I've recently been involved in cost benefit studies at two major corporations regarding replacing windows with unix. Neither proved justifiable, for any number of reasons. Without going into too many details, it just isn't an easy thing to justify much less accomplish.

And Mr Gates isn't particularly stupid. While he wouldn't like it, if push comes to shove, he'll lower his price before he'll go out of business. He has already proved this in China and other third world nations.

No, I'm afraid reports of the 'death of windows' are much like those of the death of Mark Twain.

cheers

Well, You remember when XP came out and every XP tips page on the net one thing in common: All the XP tips were how to turn something off!

Turn off viewing zips as folders which can lock up your PC
Lots of tips for killing various graphics annoyances
Lot of tips for annoying security features that went to far or talked to MS too often. Silly wizards and pop up messages.

Well guess what, Vista is going to be like that but even worse all over again.

Personally I would prefer to use win2k, I'll still use classic mode under vista if I ever have to use it.

If I try to list the things I think were an improvement from 2k to XP there aren't many

- Internationalisation and double byte support improve (only a few people who would really care though)
- The task bar remembers it's settings so that if you accidently move it, when you move it back it's setup is the same.
- Compatability mode got some old hardware that ran under '95 working that wouldn't run under 2k but I don't use that anymore

That's about it, I don't use the MS firewall,

There's a few new dos commands but they can be implemented under win2k too.

Win2k was lighter, used less memory and the interface was generally faster on the same hardware.

MS is just going the opposite way to where I'd like them to go, I want "Vista Light" Just the OS stripped down then go 3rd party for all the tools and apps
