Hi,
Sorry for the length of this post.
I bought PB online this afternoon after reading as much about it as I could find. There are a few minor issues that
almost put me off buying it and wondered if anyone else had any thoughts about this? Fred?
There is far too little info on the PB website for potential customers. It's just not convincing enough on it's own to get people to spend money. With all the other flavours of BASIC out there, it has to be something special to get people like me to part with their cash.
There should be a FAQ. I wanted to know how the registration process works, but couldn't find anything. I also wanted to know about any visual forms design add-ons for PB. I had to post in the forum to find out. I know the answers are on the forums, but it's a pain to have to search dozens of messages to find a snippet of info that should be readily available on the main site.
I think there should also be a links page. It would have sold the product immediately for me if I'd been able to find a link to other PB resources online. As it is, I had to spend 30 frustrating minutes on Google trying to find more information.
I read a message on one of the other forums from someone saying they thought PB is potentially let down by lack of advertising and publicity. I agree. It seems to be a great program that has a very enthusiastic following, but I only found out about it by accident after trawling through lots of other general sites looking for an easy to learn programming language. There must be many missed sales as a result of all this. I nearly went for iBasic instead.
The comments above are meant to be constructive criticism btw,
not a complaint!
Regards,
Jimbo

Perhaps we could polish up some sample code and place it on the AllBasic code site....

Possibly Fred might consider being a guru on the...
http://www.basicguru.com site.

Tutorials would be
very welcome.
The few I've been able to find so far have been a little advanced for me. When looking at PB's help and related websites, I'm envious of the excellent tutorial resources available to Blitz Basic users. They start with "hello world" and progress through to the advanced features of the language in plain english. They have tutorials broken down into beginner, intermediate and advanced categories.
Anyone care to help us complete beginners with a series of lessons?
Regards,
Jimbo.

Tutorials would be very helpful, because, frankly, even the questions in the beginners forum are beyond my understanding.
I did manage to make a simple calculator today, but have no idea if my code is the best approach (ie procedure vs. gosub or local vs. global variables, etc.)
regards,
wayne

I found out that there are a lot of highly opinionated programmers in this (or any forum) that will constantly point out your code's shortcomings and that is what's really wrong.
What is right is that you pursue a programming style that suits you, makes you feel comfortable and if the code works, make it so.
Once you are better at doing it a few years down the track, you yourself will be able to make it better by integrating routines and ideas from other programmers but without having to suffer their opinions.
Have fun doing it above all!
Fangles woz ear orright den?

Agree...
Sometime ago i try to alert Fred that if some one came into
http://www.purebasic.com the first screen is:
PureBasic v3.40 (Windows) (10/09/2002)
- Major release
- Tons of enhancements. Editor sources released. more...
PureBasic v3.30 (Linux) (09/22/2002)
- Major release
- Synchronization with Windows version more...
etc, etc, etc...
Does its attractive to somebody NEW?
The main site is directed to the USERS of PB and NOT to the NEW CUSTOMERS and this could make that the site visitors quits very fast.
Of course its just my opinion and Fred knows what to do, we are just trying to help : )
Happy new year!!
Best Regards
Ricardo

I would say yes, because I bought PureBasic after seeing how often
it was updated due to those very messages.

I'm currently reworking the site structure, so it will change. I'm not a webmaster as you might guess and all ideas are welcome. Plan for new website:
- groups Linux/AmigaOS/Windows in Introduction
- Add a FAQ, Links and Screenshots pages (interresting screenshots of PB apps or games are welcome !). Most of it is already done.
- Default page to Introduction, with a better sumup.

What sold PB to me was the 'librarys coded in hand optimsed ASM'! line, therefore i would also push the speed/efficiency/small .exes part too. maybe a few speed tests on the main page comparing languages as done in these forums (maybe include links to the threads)! go on make the big sell!

Some Tips:
As everybody knows, Google is the most important search engine if you want to have traffic, so this are some usefull info about it:
http://webworkshop.net/pagerank.html
and here are some usefull FREE tools to check every website to see how the search engines will 'see' it and other tools:
http://www.searchengineworld.com/misc/tools.htm
IDEAS:
-Let the visitor download some executables developed in PB (with the code to let him see how easy/difficult was to do it). Maybe many of the applications at Paul's resources site will be great.
-Some comparison table betwen PureBasic/Visual Basic/Blitz Basic/Power Basic. (This page will have a lot of keywords)
Its VERY VERY important to INDICATE the advantages of PureBasic compared with Visual Basic and Blitz Basic and let him download some small applications compiled in PB that shows those advantages (small exe size, speed, no need of runtimes, features, etc).
One CRAZY(?) idea:
Let the user type some code in his browser, compile it and give him a zip file with the executable...
I know sounds crazy, but imagine that the user could do some tests and compile it without having to download the trial version !!
Im sure that Paul (dont hate me Paul!!) could help to develope this ONLINE COMPILER. Of course has to have some limitations (its a trial) but could be a nice attraction to the visitors since its innovative!!
Its not THAT difficult to implement it!!
I hope Fred like the idea.
Happy new year to everyone : )
Best Regards

Online compiler idea is really good, I can may be setup it on my gateway. If Paul want to give a try to it tough, it would be cool
