Need advice on divx compression

I have just copied the content of the DV tape I used on xmas and new years with my kids and family. The whole file which is in DV AVI widescreen format is 17.8 GB in filesize. Does anyone know of a free way of compressing it to Divx? I have a DVD-DivX stationary player and it would be great if I could fit the whole thing on a single DVD-R. Any ideas?

If your player supports it, convert the tapes to wmv, the quality is stunning, and your discs will most likely work well on
Windows Media Center PC's as well.. Means future proof..

I agree with ts-soft, you'll find many programs which can use xvid to encode it.
Hard to find some free programs but I think this might be a nice one:

You can use AutoGK to EASILY convert your videos to HQ DivX/ XviD
http://www.autogk.me.uk/
Its free and runs fine! All you need is in there.
