Could you guys either switch forum software or at least update phpbb and use some sort of anti-bot hack?
This forum really needs it and would save the mods time of having to delete the spam.
thanks

Pointless! Altough I agree that we need some decent, common bot protection you should be aware that in the end it's just a matter of time 'till bot authors adapt to it. If they want to "hack" the forum, they will.

Not really. Any protection is better than none, and as far as I know there's no
protection here at all? Numerous times there's been discussion to add graphic
verification here (which phpBB supports) but it's never been added for some
unknown reason.

There already is visual confirmation for registration, but bots can already compensate for that now. The best way is to hide the fact that its phpbb by editing the theme accordingly.. Keep in mind, these bots are automatic and they search for specific keywords in the theme.

Why not switch to the old forums? They are better and no bot is interessted in old forum software.

There are some anti bot mods installed of course...
But there is no mod that keep the forum clean without human intervention

Spam support OCR for a long time now so yes, the forum need this protection but will also need human support.

Pointless discussion...
Better chapta is already installed some months ago.
And some other mods to keep bots out.
But you can nevver protect against manual added spam.

Anybody who has been around for a while knows the amount of trouble we have had with the forums over the years. Crashing, going down, inaccessible for days if not longer (Didn't it crash one time while Fred was on a two week vacation?).
I don't like the spammers, but they are easy to ignore. The forums have been VERY stable for a while now, don't go messing with the forums and changing or adding anything that might even remotely break them and make them unreliable.

Solution i have seen in other forums:
-Add graphic verification
-Users with less that 25 posts cant have signature, url in the profile or post urls as part fo the messages
And bots and spammers will forget this forum.

it's captcha, and it's exactly what you think about.

That would be a very good idea, actually.
As for graphic verification: I'd seen posts asking for it, but nothing announcing
that it had been done, so I naturally assumed it wasn't implemented yet. Good
to hear that it has been.

One forum I was a member of got rid of the whole auto-bot problem by mod rewriting the registration url to a different one.

Well, guess what, new users need 10 posts here to have a signature or url in there profile...
Better look at the registration page first before requesting something...you guys are all to late
You can also see the new color captcha, original it was b/w
Bots registering as fake users has dropped to almost zero the last 3 months.
