Bow to me... I've installed Debian Linux onto a flash drive!

For everything that's not in any way related to PureBasic. General chat etc...

Bow to me... I've installed Debian Linux onto a flash drive!

Post by dracflamloc »

I picked up a cheap 1GB flash drive the other day from Best Buy, took the latest nightly installer of Debian Linux, and voila, full-functioning linux on any computer I want!!! (Provided it can boot from a USB drive, soo.. most computers).

Its pretty damn cool! Just make sure if you try it, do *not* use a swap partition on the flash drive. It can severely shorten the life of your drive.

Anyhoo, get the ISO here:
http://www.us.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

Your flash drive is usually detected as /dev/sda
Be careful though because most RAID hard drives are also detected as /dev/sda so your flash drive might be /dev/sdb

After doing the system install, install GRUB to /dev/sda. Voila =)

Don't blame me if something goes wrong ;)

PS: On second thought a 2GB would probably be worth the extra money for this. But I do have a fully functioning fluxbox/X setup with g++ and such in about 600MB

Bow to me!

I have made a 21 floppies Linux system based on Debian!!
Each floppy is about 1.44Mb so 21*1.44 = ~30Mb :P

They work very well but the loading times are pretty long.
Firstly, I put the first floppy in the system and then the Linux boots up, secondly it will ask for the second floppy with the kernel and 8 floppies more to load basic drivers and the base system. So that's 10 floppies :P

Then I can load Gnome by adding 7 floppies more to the system. The remaining 4 floppies just include some programs like Firefox, PureBasic  , etc..

If someone has 21 empty floppies, I can give a copy of my Linux system, but believe me, after raw-writing the system to the floppies, you need more than just a full format to save the disks

EDIT: But I won't give you the floppy with Purebasic :P
Maybe I'll call my system FloppyLinux
But disadvantages are that it will support only the basic hardware, no USB support and there is no mouse support! To have these also added, I'll have to recompile my FloppyLinux and make it up to 30 floppies :P
(4 of the floppies will include pictures of Hasselhoff)

Thanks!
Actually doing it was not that hard, I downloaded the Business card version of debian and made a custom kernel.

And I'll bow to everyone including myself :P

 thamarok slaps dracflamloc for his unrespectness. Then thamarok takes his wireless optical mouse and throws it right in the middle of draclflamloc's face.
