Finally I got the GTk 2 editor to run nicely. On DesktopBSD. Yes, it runs Linux programs better than Linux.

I don't really know the purpose of this post, but I sort of got a bit exited. And it shows that GTk 2 version is real and it is possible to get it to work.

But is there any hope for me?
I'm using the latest Ubuntu...

And btw, what is the difference between Linux and BSD?

You've just opened up a huge can of worms =)

It runs perfectely... on GTK Versions < 2.8
I guess the GTK-Version on Tronds machine is <2.8
correct me if I'm wrong...
(got the GTK2 Ide running too.. on a linux with GTK-Version 2.4xx or was it 2.6... didn't remember)

Running the IDE under XXXBSD is not the problem. Under FreeBSD 6.1
the IDE also works fine. Compile a one-line prog with debug is running.
Can anyone compile the examples under BSD???
If so, how must be the config?

No hope for you, you're lost in the "We're saying 'it just works' over and over and over and then people start to believe it" philosophy. Or maybe you can install an older GTk version.

The parts in BSD are literally designed and made for each other. Linux is made up parts from here there and everywhere, and before a distro release the parts are checked to confirm that they go well together. But they aren't designed to go well together.

Also they use different executable formats. (But BSD can emulate linux executables.)

I don't think that the *BSD parts a made to fit together as most of it is the same as on Linux, however it's partially true since, they haven't got this Distro thingy which is at the same time weaknes and strength of Linux. I'mean it deffinitely helps that there are less BSD Distros. I think though that the important thing in the future of Linux will also be some kind os standardisation driven by commercial companys like Canonical for Ubuntu or Novell for Suse. I think the Idea of thousands of people working together in a loosly connected way is great but it needs some kind of channeling to the right direction. I mean it's important for an OS to have mainly one tool for one purpose preinstalled. That's also what I hate about Suse and love about Ubuntu. While Suse comes with 10 browsers, 20 texteditors and 7 IDEs. Ubuntu just comes with 1 Browser, 1 Texteditor and so on, though if you need more it's very easy to install other tools. If you put a n00b in front of a suse box he won't find anything usable since there is so much, He will also wonder about the crazy names and so on, all this needs the thinking of commercial companys to get the Usabilitity for the n00b and the lazy people.

The GTK2 Editor worked fine on Ubuntu Hoary (5.04) - but broke beginning with Breezy (5.10).

It is some problem between Scintilla and Gtk (newer versions) it seems.
I get it as well since i updated to Suse 10.
We will of course have a close look at this and the other bugreports for the IDE
once the libs for v4 are mostly done.

GTK 2 works perfect with SUSE Linux 9.3 (Personal Edition)
