These forums and the rules

There has been some mention of this forum going downhill, and also some people concerned that it may go the way of the German forum. (As it is unlikely we wll all start communicating in German, I guess it is something other than language that makes for the worry :)).

I am thinking that if we, as the users, understand what it is that others want, and advise what we want, then being reasonable people we will end up with some changes for the better. Each of us modifying our behaviour a little may make for a huge difference.

So ...

What do you reckon constitutes reasonable behaviour on these forums?

What is unreasonable behaviour?

My contribution to the debate:

People being rude to other people is not good. Shouting, swearing, threatening, demeaning, belittling, etc.

Good behaviour is showing courtesy in the posts.

It will be good if people can have different opinions, make mistakes, ask silly questions, suggest refinements to code, etc, etc, without getting flamed.

Less of these -> :evil: :cry: :x
More of these -> :D :) :lol: :wink:

Your thoughts?

hehe.

@thefool

About the :wink: interpretation - I always thought it mean things like "Just between us" or "As you and I know" or "nudge nudge" or "Wanna go out with me?"

:)

@Fred - yes, with a reduced postcount to more accurately reflect my technical expertise. Just the square root of Dare2, really. :)

As long as we keep the 'drivel' out of the coding forums, then I've no problem.

Anyone wants to be rude and start some kind of flame war, I just ignore them. Anyone wants a fight, then I'll meet them behind the bike shed at 4 o'clock! :D

I've no problem with whatever is posted in the 'off topic' forum; that's what it's here for I guess.

Dare, does this mean you're now only half the man you were? :)

These are the most active boards i've been at, and dispite the casual flamewar between some users, we still have quite a high level.

About forums in internet

Well, i am not completely agree with Dare, because in my opinion it is important the content of the posts, and its real intention.
I considere the respect is a matter of knowing and valueing of the other, else respect=hipocresy.
Just an opinion.
I'd like a real expression free forum (insulting, shouting, swearing, threatening, demeaning, belittling, etc.). I can't see a problem with that.
However, i realize that i (we all) will be continue to be forced to the hipocresy (aka diplomacy) in all the forums i know over internet (BTW i must add thet all the spanish-talking forums i know are pathetic in most aspects).
Moderators = Inquisitors :P

This explanation is the reason why i don't participate in irc, because i can't live without insulting sometimes, and be insulted when necessary. :D

Note that the problem of war , flamewar or offense in general in internet forums comes always from those who feel offense, but not from those who is supposed is offending.
