Just formatted my harddisk and installed Linux :twisted: . Forever... You can't even imagine how free i feel now. I suggest to the people who haven't tried it yet to do it, it's really cool ;). However, I hate 1 thing. Being 'born on Windoze' , I find the programs to start a little bit slow on linux and the memory management sucks a bit but hey, you can't have them all :D. However, it's stable as hell, never got 1 error or crash. Now that's what I call an OS.

Good choice dude!

EDIT: Now we can post our PB4 sources with win api functions and you can't use them :P

EDIT2: I don't use my WinXP so much, I always open WinUAE and emulate the Amiga 1200 :wink:

Thanks! BTW, do you know any linux API books or online docs, anything? I want to learn to program in lin but I need API to get some nice effects (just like on Win)...

EDIT: Yes I can run your sources, I use WINE and PB4 too ;)

DAMN! :lol:

However, I think I remember there was a GTK sdk, just in case you need some GTK :wink:

And BTW, the editor of the PureBasic 2.90 Amiga version looks pretty nice (it doesn't have anything but a editorgadget and the menu :wink: )

Hehe, it's nice to *take* stuff from my friend. Guess how I got the Kickstart and Workbench disks? :D

:) Thanks for the info. I'd better start searching some references :D and dig for some papers...

Like I read somewhere on the forums: Perfection is achieved when there's nothing more to remove :). Although never tried it, I think i'll emulate it and take a peek :D.

Conrgats info!

Whats your partition setup like? Linux actually has much better memory management than Windows. You might just be hitting the swap more than in Windows because of various services that are running by default, etc.

It does however run some pretty bubbly GUI stuff by default on a lot of distros, especially those that use KDE so if you strip it down a bit you should get the performance you are used to.

What are your system specs?

Btw which distro did you end up going with and were you able to get full hardware acceleration on your video card?

No, I never had :D. I'm doing this as a hobby. I have absolutely no income from this. But maybe in the future i'll try something.

@dracflamloc
Sorry, I write pretty slow :). My specs are 1GHZ AMD Family CPU, 384 MB RAM and an nVidia GeForce2MX400 graphics card... I decided to stick with Mandriva2006 because it has MPPE support in the kernel (I need this for the net connection). BTW, my swap is 784 MB big, but when I check it it says it's 0% used :shock: .

EDIT: About the graphics, I didn't succeed in installing the drivers :(. I tried it and ended with a black screen and a format.

I recommend you get some help on the mandriva forums. The speed increase from having your rendering through your gpu instead of cpu is huge.

Thanks for the help :), I'll visit it now.

What do you mean with the memory managemant as far as I know linux just occupies all of the memory to use it even faster...
The low startup rate is mostöly because of the journaling filesystem I guess because when I ran firefox on DSL with toram option wich copies the whole system into ram firefox was up in less than a second.

Just installed the drivers... Man linux is pretty hard to configure. I followed a tutorial on the mandriva forums and when I tried to startx i got a nasty error about 'no usable screens'. That's where the fun began :). But I did it and drac was right. It's much faster now. However I feel it's not as fast as Windoze. Maybe it's just me, but explorer moves a little faster i think. Thx.

@Nik
About the memory, my sistem was using allmost 95% RAM so I got scared. Now it's at about 60% and that's pretty good. Don't know why. I took an eye on the processes and they are pretty much memory consuming... Now it's ok, though.

Well good luck Inf0Byt3! :P
I would never throw away Windows! :D
