You can play with keyboard or joystick at the same time.
So you must have at least one joystick installed in windows,
probably this is the reason for that error.
EDIT: However, i've changed it. Now the error is omitted in case a joystick is not installed.

Now I reach a black screen, then the applications still crashes.
You are right, no joystick here, perhaps are you still reading it during the game?

Yes.
You need a joystick installed in windows, and you can easely do it, even you have not the joystick for real.

@Psychophanta: What is the ??? level? I made it to the 3rd level. I can't explaine why it crashes with Blade, but I HAVE a joystick here, maybe that's the error

Following the "criptic"
Psychophanta reply , I've forced windows to install a non existant jaystick.
Now running the game, it halts prompting "You need a joystick installed"
It's since 1998 that I don't connect a joystick to the PC (I prefer mouse-driven FPS, or cursor keys for all the others)

Sorry then, but that means a joystick sould be installed for real.

Pretty lame, but good that I had my SideWinder
EDIT: I played with the keyboard, not with the joystick. So you should better make a version that doesn't even have the word "joy" in it..
