so tommorrow (friday dec 9th), i am going to have my a** handed to me on a silver platter by 5 Ph.D's of my dissertation committee after having spent 7 weeks writing answers to questions given by each committee member.

each answer was 14-20 pages, and tommorrow is the ORAL EXAM, where the committee can ask me ANY question they want about each written answer, OR anything related in the topic they had me write on.

this is actually the HARDEST part of a PHD, even harder than the actual dissertation defense at the end. this is where over 50% of PHD students wash out or are asked to leave after failure.

my committe is made up of an neuroendocrinologist, a synaptic physiologist, a geneticist, a biochemist, and an ion channel physiologist.

anyone else in here think that i am going to have my a** kicked tommorrow or what?

if i make it through this, then it is all downhill from here, and all of you next December will have to address me as "Dr. localmotion34".

then again, i might have just hung myself by then...argghhhhhh

If the answers you gave were right, then you have nothing to fear.

Good luck with it. I had an oral exam for my dissertation defense a few months ago but not a separate one. The worst bit was the nerves beforehand but once you get going it's not too bad and the hours fly by. They don't expect you to know the answer to everything so don't worry if you can't answer something. Best of luck!

Story 1

Years ago my boss was scheduled to carry out some recruitment interviews, but at short notice had to make a visit overseas. I was delegated at short notice to take his place and got the candidate papers to look at. One guy had just completed his second PhD, studying the thermal characteristics of surface acoustic wave substrates... about which I knew nothing! I asked my boss what the heck I was supposed to do and he gave me a bit of advice. Tell the candidate you know almost nothing about his speciality and ask him to give you an overview. If the candidate really knows his stuff he will be able to talk to an interested listener at any level and a dialogue will develop. You will rapidly gain a view about his abilities and knowledge.

The result was (1) I found that the interviewers were just as nervous as the candidates and (2) I got an excellent SAW primer and spent an interesting 20 minutes experiencing someone elses real enthusiasm. (We made the guy an offer...)

At the recruitment interviews I was involved with the chairman was also called "the prisoner's friend". He was responsible for overseeing the fairness and conduct of the interviews. He introduced each candidate to the board members and always asked some questions that the candidate could answer... just to put them at ease. Then he passed the interview over to Mr.xxxx who will progress to more technical matters. One chairman I met would then slide down in his chair and proceed to make a drawing of the candidate. I looked though his note book and the sketches were brilliant. He said that his pictures would remind him more about candidate than a ton of notes, so when it came to putting the final interview notes together he could do a good job.

Have a good night's sleep, a walk in the fresh air, relax and be yourself. Do NOT be scared of saying "I don't know... but this is how I would go about finding out"
