Every month I get a magazine called 'Custom PC' which I really enjoy reading. This month they had a feature about a PC built into the case of a Mega-CD (the CD addon to the Mega Drive). It wasn't amazingly speced:

• VIA EPIA 5000 Motherboard

• Slimline DVD-ROM
• 40GB Laptop Hard Disk
• 60W PSU Kit
• Slimline CD Adapter
• 2.5" to 3.5" IDE Adapter Cable
• 256MB Memory

• USB Cable Adapter
• Fedora Core 2

But the effect of the machine was asweme. I'd really like to get a PC like this, not nessacarily inside a Mega-CD (as it doesn't really have any sentimental value for me - I didn't even know they existed until recently) but some other odd case but I can't really build one myself. I don't have the skill or the time.

I was wondering if there is any where you can buy PCs like this?


More Custom Rigs

I'm looking for some embeddable hardware to play with, and perhaps ultimately use in that other project of mine (see my signature below). I'd like to find a easy / cost effective setup to play with:

A very small form factor pc (pc/104?) with a modern BIOS; which should sport a descent graphics card (with OpenGL); USB interface; must run Linux; no CD-ROM; a solid state harddisk on the IDE/E-IDE/SATA-bus (whatever). Also, it would need a couple of A/D converters and accompanying software to be able to use these converters...
If that's available, doesn't weigh much (incl. industrial housing) and can be had economically, I'd be very interested indeed....

If this could be found, I'd have a setup that would allow me to program a number of realtime apps in PureBasic. Would be cool!

as soon as the grant i am applying for my PHd comes through, i am gonna roll like this:

Motherboard with 1Ghz frontside bus and hypertransport support
2 dual core AMD64 2.4 Ghz processors
16 Gigs DDR 400 ECC REG Ram
2 NVIDIA 7800 video cards with hopefully the 475 Mhz GPU in SLI configuration
2 Maxtor 10,000 RPM 74 Gig SATA hard drives in RAID config
1 250 gig ATA 133 drive on a PCI ATA controller
Windows XP64 streamlined down to just the core
dual 17 inch flatscreen monitors
3 case fans and a 680 watt power supply.
last PCI slot will have a USB 2.0 5 port expansion
DVD-R+/- CDR/RW dual layer burner
DVD ROM

the new motherboards with dual processing AND SLI support allow each processor to drive one of the video cards.

so in essence, each video card recieves input and instruction by 2 processor cores. each core communicates at the processor rating 2.4 Ghz, and each processor can communicate at the same speed.

the hypertransport severely reduces memory latency, and allows access to memory so much faster. couple that with 10,000 RPM SATA hard drives too.

all in all i am looking at around 9000$ for the machine.
