Gmail dislikes zip attachments?

Just tried to send a zip file to myself at my Gmail account and it got bounced
back as "Illegal Attachment" -- WTF? I did this test after a friend said he got
the same problem when sending me a mail. Anyone else got this problem?

I think it fails if you zip an exe or any file type they consider an illegal attachment. That happened to me.

Thanks for the replies... yep, it fails with any zip containing an exe... that
makes it useless for my purposes now.

Such a shame. Gmail = bad.

You can rename the .exe to a .pdf or .txt (or just add a .pdf extension)and then send it.
The recipient can then change the extension and use it.
Obviously, this wouldn't be a good way to distribute programs but it works with friends or to keep backups, etc.
cheers

you can rename the .zip to .zip2 as well (i dislike this GMail feature, it should be at least an option)

Renaming the zip is not an option... it's too much hassle and it's not the way
e-mail should have to work. I've got mail routing through my ISP again
now, which I didn't want to do (poor junk mail filtering) but at least I can
right-click any zip file and mail it immediately without mucking around.

Hmm, I just had a thought: Gmail probably did this to kill the "Gmail Drive"
app (

You can pack it with rar, then Gmail won't mind if there is an exe in there

It dislikes rar too.
It's pity but it's becoming a standard.

Just tried again, compressed a exe file using rar and sent it as an attachement using Gmail. No problem.
