Sockets

Hi all,
Once again I take to the forums with yet another somethng or other to throw at you all. Okay, in writting a server, such as the mail server that I've worked on. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to process socket input on a per line baises, rather than having it be buffered. I've tried and I've just had no luck, so if anyone can at least gimme a clue I'd be happy.
