hmmm... nothing important, but i just noticed something...
i was burning on my laptop as well as on my normal machine at the same time, and i noticed that me regular 24 speed liteon burner, set up to burn at 16x, is about 1.5x as fast as the philips 40x speed burner, also set up to burn at 16x
makes you wonder about all those speed claims...

Those Xx readings on cd drives have always been lame. First off they are an approximation. Secondly, the highest speed is usually a speed that the cd drive will only hit for a few seconds at most, while usually it stays much slower. It also depends on the cd/media you use too. But yea thats pretty annoying.

CD-ROMs originally spun at 150k bytes/second (1x) -- thus MB/sec was never
a consideration as such speeds were never possible. As CD-ROMs got faster,
the powers that be decided to just base the new speeds as a multiple of this,
so a 2x speed drive could transfer data at 300k bytes/second, and so on.

1x is the speed a cd player reads an audio cd with to play the audio in real time.

Not sure if 1x is truly the audio cd data speed, for all we know it may also be the rotation speed of the audio cd.
However, as always the speed is under perfect conditions.
(tested and rated by the manufactorer)
So it's not uncommon to see 16x burning
turn out to be 15.9x actual speed, etc.
These days the only use the XXx speec rating has
is general guidelines for burning speeds,
and ability to ensure that proper media is used at the proper burn and read speed rating, etc.

indication, yes, but 50% off is a bit much
