Athlon 64 FX vs Pentium 4 Extreme Edition

Anybody have any thoughts on these two processors? It looks like the Pentium CPU outperforms the Athlon - but only slightly. Is there any advantage to going 64 bit at this point? I have an opportunity to upgrade my Window box and I want to get the most bang for the buck. I’m not a serious gamer, but I do allot of encoding/rendering.

I know there are other sites this would be better suited to discuss this but I'm kinda hoping for a change in current topics.... 8O

I'm waiting for dual core (and dual socket for a total of 4 cores from 2 sockets! :o ) CPUs and dual PCI Express GPUs. Longhorn (next version of Windows) will support 64 bits so I think it would be an advantage to have a 64 bit processor. Imagine the power of a system like this (with appropriate software to show it off) - coming soon to a desktop near you!

If you can't wait that long, I'd go with an Athlon 64 so you're ready for 64 bit Longhorn and the future 64 bit software. AMD will have dual core CPUs sooner than Intel, so you'll have that as an option in 2005.

I want it now! :D But seriously, I think dual core and dual gpu will be a reality in 2005.

Nvidia has their SLI and there are rumours about ATI going dual core instead of dual cards. Perhaps ATI will offer dual core on a single card, and then let you run 2 cards via PCI express!

So this is what I want in 2006 :

- dual sockets (2 cpus) with dual cores (=4 cpus)
- dual graphics cards with dual gpu cores (=4 gpus)
- btx case and motherboard
- totally silent (water cooled?)
- 1 TB of hard drive space
- 64 bit processors w/Longhorn

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten it yet.. it's 2-3 weeks delivery time.. :(
so I guess I'll see how it is when I get it.. :p

I'm currently in the process of redoing the other livingroom in my appartment.. it's gonna be my "techy-boys-room" / guestroom.. :)
I'm gonna have my PCs and the iMac there.. and also I've got my electric guitar connected to a v-amp2, which is going to be hooked up to the Mac..
and also.. there's going to be a tv, my x-box, and perhaps a little refridgerator to keep some cold ones in short distance...
It's going to be great.. I'm like a little boy on x-mas at the moment.. just waiting to get it set up properly.. :D
