Hello, I have a problem. My daughter likes to go to alot of chat rooms i believe its aol and msn messenger. unfortunately she knows alot about computers thanks to me. I messed with the host file but after a while she figured out how to get around it. Is there a way to make a pure basic program to block these internet sites?

Quick Alternative:
Subcribe to ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, adjust the settings to block those sites and then enable the ZoneAlarm password protection so she cannot alter the settings.

But she could still just shut it down, leaving the computer open with no inet security at all.

what about installing and configuring a firewall/proxy server as administrator, password protect that then 'issue' her a username/password that has no privileges to alter the software?

Or maybe find some kind of firewall/proxy server that runs as a service and keep the admin pass secret.

2 ways..

1. One of those zonealarms could work, build a pb app that searches for
the process every 3 seconds, if it doesn't exist, the launch it.. lol

2. Do what Kale mentions.. but remove IE access from her account, build
her a browser with PB, that only goes to yahoo.com. lmao

This is a hard one.

Blocking access at home, removing IM-type software, etc is one thing, but there are friends houses, etc, etc, any amount of ways someone can circumvent things.

I think you are probably already doing the right thing (talking to and guiding her, explaining the the problems and dangers involved, etc) as, in the final analysis, it will be her decisions that determine what she does and how she goes about it.

Yeah, that's the best thing to do.. my sister went through this with her
daughter.

If you can find a nice router that has the option to block specific sites, then I say get one and password protect it.... Block ports that those messengers use... or block the chat site's IPs...
I dunno, just a thought...

Therein lies the whole reality and best solution. Short of locking her out of the computer entirely, there is nothing you can put into place that doesn't have a work around. Even if you password protect the BIOS and OS so she can't boot the machine, she will find other access.

A firewall/router can simply be unplugged and bypassed.
