Hi all

Since a few hours ago, I've been having an ugly tweeting sound in my stereo which I connected to my soundcard. It's at about 3150Hz and it's always there, no matter if I set the audio-output to mute or not. And it's only on the output of my soundcard. If I switch the amplifier of my stereo to another sound input (i.e. Tuner) the tweeting sound is gone.

What could be the cause for this sound? Could there be a problem with the fans inside my computer (6 80*80mm fans and one slot-fan)?

Yup could be the fans, especially that slot based cooler if it takes it`s power from the slot.

Have you tried unplugging the fans one by one to see if the noise goes away?

or you could dous the computer with gasoline, set it on fire, and the
sound from the burning flames, should drowned out the noise..

The slot fan doesn' take it's power from the slot, it has a power plug which goes directly to the power supply. But, however, I will try unplugging the fans one by one and see if I hear anything

Okay, I have just unplugged nearly any fan inside the case except for the CPU fan and the power supply fan. Nothing. The noise doesn't go away. What else could it be?

Sounds like a "Brummschleife" (sorry, don't know the english word, perhaps humming-loop ). This is often caused by back coupling current i.e. when two devices are connected by cable (your cinch cable) and also are grounded. The stereo is propably grounded over the antena- or cable-wire and the sound card over the power suply. You can solve this problem by simply buying a "Mantelstromfilter" (sheath current filter!?) for ca. 3 Euro and decoupling the antena (or cable) wire. Works like a charm, at least for me

Well, the stereo is not grounded, but if it is a "Brummschleife", I could shoot down my machine and if the tweeting noise disappears, it must be a Brummschleife. *merendo_is_just_holding_his_stomach_because_of_this_word_Brummschleife*

Have you got any earphones/headphones you could plug into the soundcard to see if that tweeting is still there? If it goes away, then it points at your stereo or the cable.

When you say it "tweets", you mean like a bird makes. If that`s the case, I doubt it`s an earth loop cos that`s normally just a constant "hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

Also, playing David Hasselhoff songs can ruin audio equipment ,causing similar faults

yes, ground loop hum is at constant 50Hz but this is noise at about 3kHz.

did this noise occur suddenly or did you just never connect your soundcard to an amplifier before?

did you check your card for cold joints?

also some cheap soundcards are well known for a lack of proper shielding.
maybe some aluminum coated paper board put around the soundcard will help...

@traumatic: If there are any cold joints on my soundcard, I would become seriously angry, as it's a Creative Audigy 2, which cost about 80 Euros - I think this is not a cheap sound card .

@Doobrey: Yes, it's a tweeting sound, as mentioned above, at about 3150 Hz which I think, can be called a tweeting noise. Well, I am not sure if the noise goes away when I connect a headphone to the soundcard. When I connect the stereo to the soundcard, the noise appears only when I turn the amplification level of my stereo to about 50% of maximum amplification. So I can't hear the noise with the headphones due to there is no amplification then. But when I listen to loud music with lots of BASS, the noise is also very loud and a real pain in the ass.
