VMWARE PLAYER - FREE VMs

Post by naw »

vmWare just announced an interesting new product, vmWare Player.
Its like a Runtime only version of their Workstation product. Its also FREE.

It means that you can create a Linux or Windows VM with Workstation, then other users can use it on their own machine without having to purchase a full copy of vmWare.

You can distribute and encapsulated Application environment for your application... If the user has a problem, then they can copy the VM to a CD and send it back to you for debugging.

Check it out at http://www.vmware.com/download/player/

Because the VMs hardware environment is simulated (graphics / ethernet / BIOS etc) it could be useful to games developers who are struggling with graphics card support.

Very cool. Looks like QEMU to me. Didn't see a Windows VM to run on Linux, but then, I don't suppose MS would ever allow that to happen. BTW, PureWinLin from Beach runs a debian VM on windows nicely with KarlKox's KEMU enhancement. Search for PureWinLin on these forums to find it.

FTP Software
Cerberus FTP Server
http://www.cerberusftp.com/

A very good and easy ftp-server (3 min to set up). It is "free for personal use and not-for-profit charitable organizations".

(5 cows at "tucows" and 5 stars at soft32.com and 5 PB Z:s of me! Hehe... )
