I received my book yesterday and what I great job John and Derlidio have done..Proud to have been part of the project if only the musician for Migz...
I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to start out in games programming. Johns writing style is very informative without being boring !
If you're new to game programming (or programming in general), John will take you through the processes used and arm you with the required knowledge needed to create your own games...
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

yay, book received!!! but no CD??? - issue fixed!!!

just wanted to check if others in the US have ordered the book and not received the accompanying CD? (already sent an email to idigicon, but thought I'd drop a line here too...)
shipping took less than a week to get here (east coast)...
btw, great book, Krylar!
[update]
got a quick reply from George at Idigicon...seems I should have gotten the CD and they are sending one out today...excellent service!

I received the free CD-ROM offering (gift for waiting so long for the book to arrive). But, they sent the wrong piece of software (no Quill 3D). But, it was free after all.
As far as the book... I have read 115 pages of the 310 and I really have enjoyed such. And I have found that the book is "an easy read" (from my standpoint of actively coding for multiple years now, though). I moved to another state recently so I have not had time to finished this book. But, so far ... so good.
*thumbs up*

I concur...been programming since the ol' trash-80 days and been using PB for a couple of years now, but bought the book anyway so I could have something handy to pass along should my kids show an interest in programming (they have mentioned wanting to get into the computer industry, but not any specific area yet...). I love PB, but having no physical manual or reference guide was a bit of a pain when trying to learn the specifics of the language (btw, I have also printed out one of the pdfs mentioned in another thread to have a reference guide handy, though I believe its from an earlier version).
This book does an excellent job of introducing PB and does indeed touch upon the basics of programming, but those early chapters on the basics were fairly quick and brief (IMHO). Not sure how much a newbie will be able to pick up on just from this book alone, but for someone with even just a little background in programming and who is interested in programming 2D games, I think this book is a
MUST HAVE in their library!
I'm actually interested in hearing about comparisons to Krylar's earlier game programming book (for Blitz)...is it worth buying also? Or does it touch upon the same subjects as this book (IIRC, the sample game was a network space shooter instead of a platformer).
should I worry?

I ordered the book on Sept 30. The payment cleared my account the same day.
In a couple of days it will be 2 weeks since I ordered it.
I emailed the publisher yesterday but have not received a reply.
Shouldn't I have gotten the book by now?
Anyone have any information or advice that could help me?
TIA

GedB,
Thanks but I got home today and found a note from the mailman saying I had a registered "letter" waiting to be picked up!
The funny part is in the box that says who mailed it to me it says "Great Britain".
Damn! A whole country sent me a letter!
I'll be picking it up tomorrow! Can't wait!
Thanks for the tip.

Hello Krylar,
i just bought your book and i have to congratulate you about the quality and the completeness of the book.
I had have not any prior experience in game programming and i purchased this book to help me design a small game to extend my programming abilities.
A little effort is requiring to update the code from 3.94 to 4.20 but it is worth the effort.
Congratulation.
Regards.
