...and thats the crux of it - people get angry over things they care about and they use the tools they have to hand to express their anger - they also contain their anger according to how much value they place on their safety and the possibility of the repurcussions.

To use your analogy, 2 Tech guys get into a Flame war over which OS to use or which BASIC is best. They're passionate about IT, the tool they have to express their anger is a keyboard, they live in different continents so the chance of coming face-to-face with their *enemy* is minimal so there is no consequence to their actions.

Put the same 2 people into an impoverished society, brainwash them with hatred for anything different, give them minimal education so they havent the imagination to question what they're told, now give them a weapon and a mob to hide in.

What we have today in Iraq is the same as French Civil War 220 years ago or the English Civil War 400 years ago or the Bosnian / Croation / Herzegovina Civil War of the 1990's - that claimed aty least 110,000 lives.
Iraq (ike the former Yugoslavia) is a country that was forced together after years of conflict and the result was a protracted conflict that cost many lives.

Iraq should be split up into 2 or 3 independent states - it'll happen eventually anyway...

BTW - I dont know about ETA, but the IRA bombed soldiers, politicians, pubs, banks, train stations, car parks, funerals, offices. I dont see the difference between the IRA and Al-Qaeda.

Infact, I recall working in Basingstoke in 1993 when an IRA bomb exploded at the railway station a couple of hundred yards away from my office - there were no soldiers or politicians nearby. I presume it was meant for office workers and children returning home after work/school.
