I think there are too many who've lost sight of what a computer operating system is supposed to do.

^ THIS. An operating system is meant to be like a country road, with apps being the vehicles. But the road seems to be taking over too much now, with red lights everywhere, and toll booths, and making you pay to park instead of letting you park for free at the kerb, and all that sort of crap that annoy city drivers. IMO, anyway.

I must admit the price is a little high for what you get considering I can get almost the entire worlds music library for 10 times that price per year however there's plenty of other solitaire clones on the windows store for less $

Seriously... Windows XP is a 13 year old operating system. I can't think of any software or other operating system that continues to receive support 13 years after it's initial release. Also Microsoft advised long in advance when end of life support was destined to come for Windows XP so it's not as if it should have come as a surprise. Windows XP Embedded continues to receive support until the end of 2016 and all Windows XP versions have received emergency patches for serious security issues even after the EOL date. Time to move on, it's 2015!...

If so, go to this site and obtain the information of how to disable the GWX.EXE, to remove the nagware from your PC.

You'd have to sandbox pretty much everything and ACL out anything you wouldn't want revealed. Unless you just drop all packets too and from it and audit everything that goes over the air-gap. I'd also use one of those boot-restore systems that work like VM snapshots but on the actual system.

I used XP a lot of years but don't miss it. 7/8/10 all have better multi-threading and compilation which alone is enough reason to abandon XP. I think all the dooms-day rants over the tiled start menu of 8 were kind of retarded.. I wonder what these people do when they have real problems?

Although I've never had any experience in mucking with 8, that does seem to be a valid observation.

As I already own a sizable software base which accomplishes most of the computing tasks I need to, it is imperative that any OS that I adopt be highly compatible with my existing software.
I don't want to have to buy replacement software to be compatible with a new OS.

Also, the Vista™ Ultimate victims like me, although mightily deserving, were never offered a no cost OS upgrade.
So after getting burned quite hard on that POS, I will not buy from M$ again, except indirectly, if the OS is bundled with future hardware.

The guys working on Linux Wine seem to be doing a great job in tweaking their environment to be compatible with the apps that I currently use.
And because it's open source, over time I expect Wine to become more, not less compatible with my software base.
That in addition to being much more "secure" than the current spookware currently masquerading as the "must have" operating system for the masses.

MS give us a free OS with many good features, maps, many desktops (aleluya), 3D editor.. to play.. where´s render button?
Is a personal decisition install or not. I have installed win10 and not bad.. work quick, detect all my hardware.. not bad..
No problem for me if MS put any apps, or try to take my private data. No problem while I can disable this options.

Is true! can use Linux is really good, free, beauty and quick. I have Ubuntu +1, but only expert users work with Linux, thats is the crude reality.
If you program and develope for win OS, you fall in win10 soon.. hundred millons of flys cant be wrong..
Serious! Like us or not, win10 is here.. and when more soon we accept this.. less problems with this OS we have.

I'm sure that this little review's script was reviewed by some important folks, just to make sure there would be no misunderstandings.

Preston Galla did a good job of walking the fence, and I can agree with most of what he said.

His opening statement, "The main thing that I like about Windows® 10 is that it undoes the damage that was done by Windows® 8.", is rather telling coming from a reviewer in a major magazine.

There was little wrong with Windows 8.1 that a bit of tweaking couldn't resolve. It didn't take much to be able to work in either desktop or Metro. I've just installed Windows 10 on an old laptop. The first thing that I've noticed is that the professional look of 8.1 has vanished. The new look appears to me to be half finished. Everything seems larger than before and isn't as easy to use. Edge doesn't seem any better (possibly worse) than Internet Explorer. I shall be sticking to Firefox. Although Firefox's face has changed in line with the Windows 10 look, at least finding your way around it is a doddle. I'm just waiting for someone to come up with a look that will make Windows 10 appear like Windows 8.1!

Saying all that, so far (and I've only had it for days) Windows 10 has run everything I've thrown at it and it seems to accept a number of drivers for Windows 8.1 without a problem. When I'm satisfied it works OK on the old laptop, then I'll consider putting it on my main laptop.

Just a few points on installation:

1. I couldn't upgrade directly from the downloaded upgrade file. I just kept getting "Something happened" and an error code.
2. I downloaded the appropriate iso and burnt it to a DVD (note it is too large for a CD). With the computer already booted, I double clicked on SETUP on the DVD and away it went. The laptop is old and so everything was slow. It took ages to upgrade, rebooting the laptop on several occasions, but it came out the other end with all my apps still working. Also, I didn't have to enter the Windows code for my existing Windows 8.1.

I can't guarantee that this will work for everybody but it worked for me. Also the apps were not critical to me. I would strongly recommend saving an image of your existing system to an external drive as a safety measure.

I've just installed Windows 10 on an old laptop. The first thing that I've noticed is that the professional look of 8.1 has vanished. The new look appears to me to be half finished.

You know RNBW, that is the same impression that I had about Windows® 8.1 versus 7, it looked half finished.
So doing the math, compared to 7, the Windows® 10 look might appear to some to be only a quarter finished.

Windows® Vista™ and Windows® ME move over, it looks like you have a new cousin on the bench of shame.

Unlike the majority here in the USA, the Germans (as usual) seem very perceptive and on top of Microsoft's abuse of trust.
Currently, half of the YouTube videos returned from a search_query="windows+10+spy" search, are in German.
They seem to really know their technology stuff.

I doubt if M$ will admit their mistake in implementation,
and will attempt to blithely bumble along, acting like everything is OK.
Methinks if you have it, then it's time to sell M$ common stock.

Windows® 7 is the new XP.
Its market share was still expanding until the release of Windows® 10,
and I suspect Windows® 7 use will not drop off significantly until sometime the next decade.
Which as a software developer makes me happy.
Corporate driven change for change (as in money) sakes, is not nice.
Tech things should become obsolete when they can no longer properly do the job, or it is too costly to maintain compared to newer tech, or superior results can be achieved using the newer methods.
And not simply because there is a shiny new toy to be acquired, as in the case of Windows® 10.

Check out Apple computer sales (without phones). They seem to be increasing by a few millions every year.
I think it's currently over 20 million sold Mac's every year, and from what I've seen it's really more and more
every year. While MS seems to have problems, Apple sales go up and up every quarter.
There is still 2 separated platforms within Windows 10. Modern UI and Classic UI. Even preferences settings
have two different platforms. Edge, the new browser, is based on Modern UI - and you can see it with the right-click menu
that does not look like an ordinary right-click menu. It's just ugly and worse than Win8.1.
MS had it's chance, but after so many years it's enough. Every new version gets worse: Advertisements, Spyware, Keylogger, trying to trick the (dumb) user...
I have the feeling more and more people are now really moving forward to Linux and Mac OS X. Goodbye Microsoft.
