Ok, AMD Mantle is for all PCs - not just linux. The studio who partnered for EA (DICE) don't have a release date for a Mantle compatible edition of Battlefield 4 - some time maybe December is the latest.

Again, the simple questions, which app is only on linux to make me ditch OSX and Windows?

Where can I order Battlefield 4 for linux for launch on the 29th October?

If Mantle is so earth shattering, why have both MS and Sony stated that their next-gens won't be compatible?

I know I sound like I don't use linux, I do - I run debian-headless on my nas and openelec on my Pi.

If you still think that page is still true then
obviously you have not tried UBUNTU 12.10 or 13.04 anytime during the past year.

That very stale opinion expressed on the linked page is no longer valid, period.
Without a doubt, no question.

But of course you have not tried it (desktop Linux) recently have you?

And guess what?
Starting today you can access a new version.
It's already available as an upgrade for existing installs.

Actually, yes! or did you miss debian-headless? or do you think that means no gui?
I've also fired up Ubuntu 13.04 - which disliked my AMD/ATI video card - so not too much encouragement there.
The blog is supposed to be read, very much, with a smile on your face. I used to be similar to you, always trying to get folks to give Ubuntu/Debian or whatever a chance. The problem is, you can't ignore the reality. i applaud your enthusiasm, but ask that you temper it with a sense of humour.

I thought it was a cell phone (cellular disruptor).

Did you actually run it or just make an attempt?
I've suscessfully installed UBUNTU 13.04 on 6 of the 7 systems that I attempted to.
The one failure was due to system old age.
That Windows 98SE system has 512 MB ram and a 1.2 GHZ Athlon CPU.
Although UBUNTU made a valiant attempt to startup, even inserting a decent graphics adapter could not help the Unity interface to boot, and I had to install Wary Puppy which is designed for older systems.
The only other problem that I had in the six sucessful installs (4 desktops & 2 laptops)
was on my personal 32-bit desktop where UBUNTU choked on my 20" HP S2031 monitor (a common consumer grade model).
An stupid oversight that I had to research how to fix, but I did fix it.
A problem that I expect will be corrected today after my system gets updated to 13.10.
If I hadn't found a solution, then I would have been stuck in 1024x768 display on a 1600x900 monitor, not nice but not a deal breaker.
Your ATI card must be very unusual if you could not find a solution.
I am also using a ATI RADEON.

As far as being similar to me?
My first Linux install was Red Hat 5.2 way back last century, and I saw that it was not ready for the masses.
My next look was UBUNTU 8.10 and I saw vast improvements but, nope not yet.
UBUNTU 10.10 was nice but again no... not ready for prime time.
UBUNTU 12.10 Looking real good.....
UBUNTU 13.04 ABSOLUTELY NO TYPING NEEDED TO INSTALL (except names and passwords)!!! Easy upgrades, easy installs. XP losing support. Let's do this.

So no sir, not too similar there at all.
I think that we have way different criteria for comfort level.

As of now I have no reservations about proselytizing for UBUNTU.
It is that good.

Nor me, except I'm now using Mint (Cinnamon), a Ubuntu derivative.

If an old fart like me can go from Windows to Ubuntu in a couple of months, with very little effort and no prior knowledge of Linux, I don't see why some of the hot-shots here are having so many problems.

I can only assume they have the mental abilities of a gnat or want everything handed to them on a plate with zero effort on their part. Or perhaps it's because, after spending a lifetime working with Windows, they find it hard to believe there might be something as good or better.

Normally, I'd just let it go. I honestly did not mean to offend or upset anyone.

1) The intent of my past few posts was to correct the mischaracterization and or perception that your post created that Linux is not ready for general use. Not to get you to move to Linux.

2) It seems illogical to make any significant link between the current shortcomings of the PureBasic Linux compiler and the usefulness of the UBUNTU Linux OS.
I'll just have to develop software in Windows , where the compiler works excellently, and I must wait for the compiler upgrades to actually support the documented functionality in Linux.
Of course I am disappointed that PureBasic is not yet nice for game development in Linux, but I have a great deal of confidence that the deficiencies will be eliminated in short order.

Meanwhile what does that have to do with the quality of UBUNTU Linux?

I sure hope that I don't have my enthusiasm shattered by the upgrade,
the 'RESTART THE SYSTEM TO COMPLETE THE UPGRADE' prompt just appeared!

Only one problem, and that one was a bonehead move by Canonical.
It looks like they obsoleted a useful package without any suitable replacement.

As a multi-OS applications programmer, just to be able to modify the file extension link to associated programs and to change icons associated with the file types, I don't want to have to delve into the innards of Linux, and I will wait for a replacement module.
