What Operating System do you develop for? Small poll...

Everything else that doesn't fall into one of the other PB categories.

Re: What Operating System do you develop for? Small poll...

Post by Kukulkan »

Hello,

as there is a new poll under development, I decided to evaluate this poll now. Here are the results:

This result contains all votes until the post of RichAlgeni from Wed Feb 15, 2012 2:09 am (page 4):

Operating System(s) I develop for: *1
[xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Windows
[xxxxxxxxxxx] Linux
[xxxxxxxxxx] Mac OS

My programming intention: *1
[xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] private / hobby (non public / for your own needs only)
[xxxxxxxxxxx] public internet (freeware / open source)
[xxxxxxxxx] public internet (shareware / offer small licences)
[xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ] commercial (commercial and professional products with appreciable price)

My PureBasic satisfaction on functionality and quality: *2
[xxxxxxxxx] fully satisfied
[xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] medium satisfied, but I think some points are still missing or insufficient
[xxxxxxxxx] it's ok for me, but I know there are some real issues
[ ] I'm completely dissatisfied

I would like to see PureBasic-team focusing more on: *2
[x] game development functions (game engines, better or more graphics and sound)
[xxxxxxxx] application development functions (more professional gadgets, deeper functionality, more OS integration)
[xxxx] cross plattform functionality (both language and development environment)
[xxxxxxxx] quality enhancements (more and faster bugfixes are prior to new functions)
[ ] making PureBasic Open Source
[xx] speed enhancement (making PB programs faster)
[xx] supporting more plattforms (like iOS, Android etc.)
[xxxx] other (one point only: _____________________________)

I did not count the parts, where users marked multiple items instead of only one. That block of them is not used.

My evaluation is, in words:
  • Most users are developing for Windows (what a surprise).
  • There is about the same number of users developing for Linux than for MacOS.
  • Many people seem to earn money with their PureBasic development (this is important, I think).
  • Most people are medium or completely satisfied with PureBasic (73%).
  • There are 27% of the users that think that there are some real issues and are not very satisfied.
  • Most people want to have more quality (what leads me to the conclusion, that quality is not the best).
  • Also many people like to have more features with focus on application development (wink to Fred).
  • There is also a growing number of people developing cross-plattform (implies the wish to enhance compatibility between plattforms).
  • There are far fewer people in game-development as I thought.
I'm not entitled to force anyone of Freds team to respect those results nor do I want to force anyone with anything of this poll. I've just been curious about the people using PureBasic. Thank you for participating my poll!

Best,

Kukulkan

This poll represents just the level of development.
Windows is best supported, Linux and Mac have (big) problems -> windows is on top
main-focus on application, lag in game-engine -> most just want application

But i'm a little bit surprised how many want or already making money. :)

I think this is also the reason for the big wish about better quality. If people are using PureBasic for commercial products, the quality of the development language is essential. I also rely completely on PureBasic for our commercial products. I'm still on 4.51 for that reason. I will switch to 4.61, if the BETA status is due. I don't like to do experiments with customers...

The issue is a sliding scale for making money: I use PureBasic nearly everyday, however, I have only made 2 applications for businesses - one being a file converter, and another being a cpanel website backup utility. Both being quick and dirty apps that haven't really made much money. I know that I haven't recouped the expenditure on PureBasic yet.

I *do* have plans to create something large with PureBasic, and I did start... however many years ago I joined, but the form building and maintenance was so... time consuming, it has been put on hiatus until either I finish writing my own Visual Designer or the PB team release something awesome.

Yes, I know there are existing VDs out there, and they are very good with Windows, but when you then try to incorporate another platform, you are then landed with the same problem as doing it without a VD - everything has to be rearranged by hand as there isn't a cross platform VD.

My own take on it resolves the cross platform problem, it's just that it's getting bigger and more complex when I try to fix problems with varying layout orders... :|

I often wonder if going the wxWidgets route would be beneficial for PB. If they can get bindings made for PB, and perhaps support from one of the popular cross-platform Form Building apps to output PB code.. That would be neat.

Although I have a secret dream where if I won a huge lotterry (USD $50mil or something) I could invest money in trying to bring PB together with ProGUI, and maybe get a few more programmers on board to make it souped up project with full support for the big 3 platforms, faster turn-around on bugs, and new features, etc (Win/Lin/Mac)

Have you looked at the size of the libs? PB is small and compact. wxWidgets is excellent, but it is far from being compact. For some folks, size matters.

Once it goes cross-platform, ProGUI could be an alternative to wxWidgets. ProGUI is not compact, but it integrates perfectly with PB and requires little effort to use.

I do agree with Fox. The lack of a decent cross-platform VD can be a hindrance. Especially for larger projects.
Best wishes to the PB community. Thank you for the memories. ♥️

Hi,
I'm surprised to see that I'm the only one who is making (read: try to make) 3D games with PB.
There are a lot of people who are making games (see French forum also).
This is not an accurate result of the PB users on the moment.
I do not know, but maybe the wrong time, wrong place ??

You are not the only one. I think the biggest obstacle for most is trying to find a decent and affordable 3D engine that will easily integrate into PB. Most people seem to avoid the native 3D commands. When it comes to a 3D engine, everybody seems to want something different. :|
Best wishes to the PB community. Thank you for the memories. ♥️

@marc_256
In the question you were just allowed to choose one option. Not wanting the game libraries of PureBasic to be updated with highest priority doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't creating games.

Currently I'm trying to set up an improved poll where you will be able to select which software you already created: Games, servers, image tools, word processing etc. - it's a huge list which will hopefully give us some good overview of what the community has created so far.
Please take a look here and let me know if and how it can be improved:

If any of you native English speakers have any suggestions for the above text, please let me know (via PM). Thanks!

This comes from Google. I guess it automatically changes to whatever language the browser prefers.

That text part has been quoted from the first post of this thread. I will remove/replace it.

OK, we're both no native English speakers so... are you sure about that? ;-)

@Kuron,

- yes, but 'bullet' and 'ogre3d' are (for me) very good chooses.

@Kuron and c4s,
- so, I was only a bit surprised to see the results.

All the other text is in English, and Google just translates this single word to German? That's strange.

Perhaps it should read "which subregion do you live in?" instead, but I'm pretty sure that the word "in" shouldn't be there twice. ;-)
