fsw, you are probably right, have never used HotBasic and only perused trouhg the documentation and had the impression that it used the said lib extensibly, but still <it uses raymonds FBU lib>

if HotBasic only uses the io functions, then it would be better for the HotBasic developer to use the code by Stephen L Moshier which he placed in the public domain, ioldouble.c
because you need extra precision to input and output the 80-bit floats and because there are no strings attached to said public domain code.

Ionic Wind shutting down?

Paul Turley has stated his intent to shut-down the Ionic Wind web site at the end of October. Apparently, he will discontinue any further development of his Aurora and Emergence products.
I have no further information as I have been permanently banned from the site after voicing my opinion on what was going on there. I assume my post was removed. I have purchased several licenses and made financial contributions to Paul, then get permanently banned with no warning.
Anyone have more information on what is going on over there?

I saw your post, and was tempted to express my agreement with you, Paul is a talented programmer but lousy at finances, and this constant begging.
Edit: Randall, your post is still there and so is your profile, but your not in the member list.

It'll be closing October 31st
It's a big pity and seems none can maintain it.
It's no use even someone have source because only Paul knew how he wrote this and can develop it further.

it's about time he made up he's mind, but knowing human nature, he will somehow start another compiler project.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. All i can say is i feel sorry for the people who have been ripped off by him. I too have been permanently banned for telling him exactly what i thought of his begging and lack of progress. I know for a fact that many of the users over there, helped paul out when he was 'going through a bad time™' and gave him (in some cases) hundreds of dollars each. Every month, without fail, something would crop up that he couldn't handle, such as, daughters wedding, prom, travel expenses for job interview, alchoholic brother's rehab, mothers illness, dog's surgery, etc, etc... man it just went on and on. The usual things that everybody else in the world has to deal with but without forum sponsors. In return he's shafted everybody who helped/funded him.

Someone in another post here asked me "what do you mean by a 'professional compiler' ? "
Listening to this I'd say, (apart from features and support) one that's been around at a minimum of 5 years (not including beta version so freebasic still hasn't started year 1  )
I don't care how wonderful it is or who wrote it, if it's new then it's not ready by definition in my books.
The "test of time" is a pretty good test

I agree 100%, Kale. There seems to be a cult-like atmosphere in the Ionic Wind forum, and I believe any posts that are even slightly critical are deleted and the poster is banned.
I was excited to find Paul Turley's Ionic Wind site as his products showed promise of being the lightweight cross-platform development tool I was looking for. I purchased a license for Aurora, and began to learn how to use it. Since the documentation for Aurora is scant, I found myself spending considerable time on the forums searching for clues on how to accomplish certain tasks. The more I read on the forums, the more concerned I became about the future of these products.
I too was initially drawn in by Paul's constant begging for money, and made financial contributions and purchased additional products to help Paul out. After a while, his constant begging became humorous and creative, but also pitiful. Why does this guy keep asking me to pay his bills?
I became frustrated by Paul's inability to finish anything. He takes Aurora up to Release Candidate #1, but instead of finishing it, marketing it, and expanding his customer base, he starts up new projects. I suspect these new projects, such as the Linux version of the compiler, was just a ploy to get his small band of followers to contribute more money. After doing a little work on the Linux version, Paul abandons it because his followers didn't contribute enough money to suit him.
In my post on the Ionic Wind forum, that was deleted, I explained why I stopped investing my time and money in his products. I had began to question Paul's stability and business acumen. For this, my post was deleted, and I was permanently banned without warning, and not even a courtesy email explaining why I was banned. Is this any way to treat your customers?
Paul has a small but loyal cult-like group of followers. It pains me to see him repeatedly abuse them on the forums and rip them off with his incessant begging and uncompleted products.
Fortunately, I am not as heavily invested financially and time-wise as many are on his forum, whom Paul has truly shafted.

I invested money in Ionic Wind (Paul) as a partner developer and helped out on the graphics side of things. I was also moderator for the 2d/3d graphics forums. After a while (and after hours of work) i realised my work was of little value to him, and he had other priorities. Personally i felt betrayed and immediately left the community without any fuss or forum posts. None of Pauls promises was kept to any partner developer and none of them saw a dime of any profit sharing as was the deal of investing.
I lost money, but i chalked it up to experience and honestly i didn't mind that much as it was a small amount. But i get increasingly irritated that these other very compassionate people can't see how Paul continually begs to continue to fund his lifestyle. I mean, what do we all really know about Paul's situation? Nothing! We know only what he has posted about himself on the forum. I'm not making any allegations but it could, in my humble opinion, be untrue. He might be living the high-life funded by other people?
Also Aurora was a kick ass product and had massive potential, just because it didn't sell thousands when it first went on sale irritated Paul and development stopped. But, who wants to buy an incomplete beta? I said then and i'll say it know, if Paul concentrated on the 3D engine and the libraries to make them as comprehensive as possible, and actually finished the product, people would of flocked to it. I alway likened the language to C# .NET without the .NET framework. If he had this goal in mind, just think of where he would be now?
Anyway, i'm ranting now. I personally think it's for the best that Ionic Wind closes and Aurora and EBasic bites the dust. Nothing good has come from them, infact, the very opposite has happened.

I saw that too and decided not to
invest. Lets face it, Paul is one the most talented coders i think we will ever meet, but wow, he has a knack for bleeding his userbase dry with his stories. The Ionic Uni smelled like a scam from day one, and that's how it's turned out. Hopefully after this catastrophe, Paul will never be able to pull the wool over people's eyes again.
