Some file management programs, certain games, even windows media player (Which you think would be allright) have either crashed or outright locked the system up necessitating the reset button.

(Cannot remember the others off the top of my head) But, the same programs installed on Windows 7 seemed to be fine.

I am not sure if it's a Windows 8 thing per-se but mayhap related to 64 bit issues.

Don't know.

Strange for sure. Win 8.1 64 bit has not given me much trouble at all. Not as stable as XP was.
I doubt if we'll see MS produce an OS that can top XP any time soon. :(

Ah well. If I need to do any file drag and drop development, I will have to do it in the VirtualBox Windows 7 image space, i'm getting too tired and depressed to bother about this any more.

My family just finished shifting my mother in law into a gorgeous nursing home (at her request), we still have to sell her house, clean it out and prevent her son stealing her money. (you have no idea of all the paperwork and running around (I hope you don't!!)) Don't have the spare mental capacity to worry about this one thing any more.

Thanks for all your help folks, I'll go back to working on my address book (Which doesn't have drag and drop!!) in my spare time.

Hang in there Fangles. Dealing with family stuff like that is never easy. Kudos to you for being there for your mother-in-law. She is lucky to have you.

That first link of Kuron's seems particularly promising. Did you try it fangles?

Tried links 1 and 2, seems like windows 8/8.1 is too easy to nobble, no changes though.

I didn't try link 3 because as the disclaimer says "When you completely turn off UAC, programs working with the new Start menu (Metro interface) will stop working. Such programs are Weather, Travel, Maps and others." and this can/may be be a real problem down the track.

UAC is there for a very good reason and it's not worth potentially crippling some (or many future) programs by turning it off just to save my drag and drop. Eventually, there may be another way.

But thanks for asking.

Sadly, that is the one that usually ends up working for most people. Hence, why I don't use drag and drop in software anymore.

It's amazing how UAC can affect some, but not all computers. I even changed my stings to "Always Notify" to match that of Fangles PC. Drag/drop still works flawlessly for me. :?
I'm still not sold on UAC being the culprit here.

Best of luck to you Fangles with your family situation. :)

FYI Fangles, I am now having issues similar to your drag/drop problems. I am unable to drag/drop external images to my PB app.
If I drag/drop an image from an external IE, or Chrome browser window to my app, no joy.
If I drag/drop an image from an internal or external PB app with a WebGadget, it works fine. 8)

I'll let you know if I figure it out.

I have other troubles too, all windows 8.1 related. Tried to create an extra printer driver and at the last stage, it goes around and around in circles trying to create it. I should make a list of win 8/8.1 bugs for ms but they are dumping it anyway for windows 9 ROFL!

Thanks for trying Sparkie.

I discovered that UAC is the culprit for me. I went into the Win registry and FULLY disabled UAC and my drag/drop for images worked fine. I also got it to work by disabling Protected Mode in IE.

Before doing so, I followed these instructions to allow my app to drag/drop, but it was a no go.

So, all I need to do now is convince all users of my app that they must either disable UAC or IE Protected Mode before using my app. Nooooooo problem....piece of cake....I got this :!:

I'm not convinced that Win 9 will be any less hassle than 8.1. Oh how I miss the good old days of coding for XP. 8)

I miss the good old days when I didn't have a brother in law who wants his share of his mother's estate before she dies and is causing all sorts of trouble to get it.

Compared to that, this is nothing.

No wonder I can't concentrate to program any more!

The more I hear about your problems the more I realize that we have identical problems!
Good luck..
