Re: Japanese Animation
I must say that most anime are not my taste but one I really enjoyed was "Nodame Cantabile", you can watch it on Crackle in english.
Re: Japanese Animation
<necromancer alert> I must say Sword Art Online was one of My favorites, but my reason for posting in this thread is that I Live in <the declining> America, and was wondering if someone can enlighten me on the theme song of "I My Me! Strawberry Eggs" http://youtu.be/w-ou1KUm4vc?list=PLRlBW ... 0EtI9v32GB , it's a Country song in Japanese but quite beautiful, can you tell me more About the singer and if she has more country music or if this was just a once in a lifetime occurrence?
<edit> what the hell, just now the audio of the theme song is muted???
<edit2> just so you know, I bought the DVD of the series because I liked it, and would not have bought it if I had not seen it on youtube first, so how many people are you going turn away?

Re: Japanese Animation
look, whatever you are doing is turning potential customers away.
Space☆Dandy

.........................Meow, Dandy, & QT
If you weren't alive Elvis was, then you may not appreciate this as much as I do.

Combining zany, offbeat, quirky, amazingly well thought out sci-fi short stories, with awesomely original seventies style soundtracks is a winner for me.
If you are ever in the mood for some high quality mindless entertainment, and don't mind watching anime, episode 9 of SPACE☆DANDY's second season is excellent!
Episode 10 was the very first love story in the series, and it was really well done. I was glad to see the anime's artwork reverting to the classic Dandy style, after a couple of weeks where it had gone missing.
Episode 11, released a few months ago, is yet another love story!

What I really can not figure out is why so many anime enthusiasts insist that these anime are not of European featured characters when they clearly are.

.................................Honey, a worker at BOOBIES the restaurant
In SPACE☆DANDY, the main antagonist Doctor Gel is a pimp daddy styled, Uncle Sam hat wearing, caped gorilla with a Captain America shield on his shoulder. Yellow stars replace the white ones on the hat and shield. The Doctor travels in what looks like the decapitated head of The Statue of Liberty. Episode 12 of season 2 has a Kingfish sounding, Al Sharpton coiffured, alien with a blue star on his forehead acting as judge in Dandy's murder trial. Listening to the great music throughout the series, it is easy to detect from where they draw much of their inspiration, but very covertly. The Japanese have a huge amount of tremendous talent, but they are so much in denial about so very much.
Keep it BASIC.
Re: Japanese Animation
Can't let Oryaaaaa do it all by himself
_Solty Rei_... I was a bit surprised by the ending, quite fitting.
_Steins Gate_... time traveling and angst combined.
_The Maxx_ isn't Japanese but cannot be mentioned often enough
_Scrapped Princess_ old but good.
I'm currently rewatching _Bubblegum Crash_ and _Bubblegum Crisis_, old and new versions.

I really loved Steins Gate the series.
Re: Japanese Animation
I just watched the first episode of Mushi season 2, but because it was sub only, about one minute into the show I stopped and played episode 1 of season 1 and then went ahead and watched the rest of the episode 1#2 and the similarities are striking, don't know about the rest of the series.
btw, I love Mushi-Shi, and I hope they english dub season 2

Re: Japanese Animation
I just watched Episode 1 of Gangsta and holy Batman!!

The premier episode, if presented as a stand alone short movie, would rate an A+ by me.
I expect an anti-climatic reaction to the rest of the series, simply because
I don't see how they could follow that first episode with anything as well done.
But I do hope that I'm wrong.

Re: Japanese Animation
You're not in to anime until you know all the dozens of genres by heart and have a room full of anime collectibles like some grown-men I know.. You're really in to it when you go to Japan to work for anime media companies just to boast about it..
Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost In The Shell, and Akira are the deepest I've went in to the rabbit-hole. I like the way they do lighting and music in most of them. Like the glow to everything and the subtle music queues. I could probably get in to it a lot more if I had the time.
SIDE DISCUSSION: I remember between 2008 and 2010 big software companies like AutoDesk were putting out solutions that supposedly automated most of the animation framing process. None of them actually saved time though and all the companies kept using building full of people drawing frame-sets.

Re: Japanese Animation
From what I've seen, there's not too much unique rabbit hole, many of the burrows are just about the same.tj1010 wrote:Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost In The Shell, and Akira are the deepest I've went in to the rabbit-hole. However I just watched a classic anime right up there with the three that you posted tj1010,
If you like animations of buxom topless females, over the top bloody violence,
depictions of child abuse stories, juxtaposed with a soundtrack in medieval chorale style,
all combined within a compelling and fascinating sci-fi storyline,
then check out Elfen Lied (2004).
If the storyline is secondary to the artwork,
then Heavy Object with its long lingering shots of jiggling female anatomy,
combined with lots of big cool explosions, may be more to your liking.

I have never had so much fun watching anime than watching you are under arrest
