Well, in my case PB is always the right tool. No matter what the job is. I have written a lot of Tools for my company including network, word processing and XML applications. So as for the job or when coding hobby projects at home I haven't came across any borders that would force me to change the language. At least this is true for application & game programming and ignoring web development.

Oh, and as for that saying about basic programmers unable to learn to program in other languages like C++ and so on, that's pure and simple BS! I've seen far too many basic programmers go on to Pascal, C, C++, C#, Java, Mono, .NET and anything else. I personally believe that the person who said that originally was pure and simple hate'n on basic cause he didn't think of it or needed to stroke his self indulged ego.

srod wrote: @TheFool : yes I've been having a good look at .net (VB in my case) and, well, it's not half bad at all! So, it is as bloated as my old granny after 6 bottles of Guinness, but there are some tasks for which the whole .net thingy makes one hell of a lot of sense! I have one application in mind which is just calling out for .net - if only I could put PB aside for long enough for me to get started! :)
Yeah, the right tool for the right job. .Net has some fantastic features. I'm daringly impressed by it all the time, i think m$ hit the spot with this one. I'll continue to read my book about it though, still a real beginner :)

Actually there is another reason to reccomend PB over C# ot C++ etc.

You can read someone elses source code and generally figure out what they were doing in ANY dialect of basic (VB.net comes close to NOT being able to do this) but I cannot make heads or tails of most of the C code out there that I have seen unless it is commented. Heavily commented!

True but C# isn't C/C++, you will find C# much more easy going.

Yep, and with the newly released version 2.0 you get real compatiblity (both
binary and codewise!) with the .NET Framework 2.0. That is freaking awesome,
I'd have never thought that the Mono project would bring it that far :P

<yoda voice>
C# leads to .net
.net leads bloat
bloat leads to ... java
Once you set foot down the dark path, forever will it control your destiny

Just say "no" to java kids!

What can I say - I likes Basic! I'd be able to get up to scratch much quicker with VB than c# I reckon.

Try and see. :) At least with VS2005/8 you get both.

Pure "Basic" holding back potential customers
Erm... nope! :D

Perhaps you could write a language converter that produces a single monolithic .pb file for the compiler?

That way people would be happy with PureC or PureFortan or PureModula2 or whatever makes you happy!
