Sparkie,

For the first piece of code that crashes for you, the kinda dashed line focus rect you see after you click on the arrow is normal Vista behavior I think. You can see the same activity in Vista in some cases with explorer. Just Vista weirdness I think. However, when I click off the header arrow the app doesn't really crash, the program execution just finishes.

Thanks SFSxOI. After digging deeper, I see what you mean. Although I did at one time get an error (something about Stakhash), I now see that there is indeed a #WM_CLOSE (#PB_Event_CloseWindow) message coming from somewhere.
