As a developer you should have build-essential anyway. Besides it does it for you if I recall. Download the 30 day trial and the install comes with a perl script - just run it and answer some simple questions.

Well as I wrote on different posts I use Linux 90% of the time so PureWinLin is not an issue and yeah I know it, I also tried to convert it for vmware which worked thanks to thje qemu image tools however I can't get the x-server to work, I managed to run purebasic on purewinlin in vmware over a remote x session though which is pritty fast but hard to set up

Yes, create your own distro. You can base it on an existing one and just add what you want to add.

dagcrack wrote:Hehe From my side, It's either MAC for gfx design and video processing, windows for gamedev or linux for networking.... So I'm happy with all of them, and most of the times with Windows itself.
Thats about the same here as well. I've always used mac for video processing or any kind of graphics (until photoshop & premier went over to the pc, .. ergh!)

Windows is great for gamedev, but now that PB4 for the osx is coming out in the near future .... who will need windows then for game dev? :D As for linux for networking, I've only been using the PureWinLin thanks to Beach.

Then again, I'm heading in the other direction, pure OSX, and looking for a way to run WinXP (and soon Vista) through vmware or some such on an OSX.

That's not true in general. I still earn my money with coding. Just the main platform is different. It has opened the door to whole new customers. In contrast to many OS fanatics out there, i don't dislike Windows / Bill just because I've chosen Linux. For most of my projects the OS just doesn't matter at all, although it's easier (for me) to develop a piece of software on linux and create a version for running on Windows & OSX, than the other way around.

Maybe that's not the case for the average employed coder.

No, Flo, don't get me wrong... I was talking about this migration thing. It's true that I came back to win, but for a short time and just because I broke my linux installation. How could I say that all the linux users are hobbysts ;)?
