Actually, Fred knows that if he ever sold Purebasic, then I'd be hiring a hitman...

Well this is the off topic section. I really don't see Aurora as an alternative to anything. It's in alpha 3
and he'll probably sell the company again.

I think another tool alongside PureBasic is NSBasic, which has a summer sale right now. Basically, it converts
VBScript programs into single exe's, and can program for CE handhelds and Windows mobile too.

Back on track though, if PureBasic is going to be free upgrades forever, maybe they could start to sell some
specialized (official) libraries or something?

I would shure pay up for a library to handle webgadget interaction for example. :)

i would have a problem with selling addon libs that would turn out like the situation of darkbasic.

however it might be a good idea for them to sell non-crossplatform libs as separate addons to the core of purebasic.

I know what SRod means. I think many of the people here have seen great technologies come and go. We've all had to give up our Amigas and move on. :(

Still, I reckon PB has another Decade in it. By then I'll be in my forties, my children will be teenagers and cyborg monkey butlers will serve us all in our moon base mansions. Erm, not too sure about that last one.

For now, enjoy and don't worry about it too much.

For the next few years PB will grow into something amazing.

Many years later there will be something else.

Not likely. Pyxia was being run as a full-time business when Paul sold it. Paul only develops Aurora in his spare time, as he has a reliable full-time job. Plus, its not his to sell. From my understanding, Aurora is owned by something like six people.

I also wish the kiddies would quit knocking the fact that Paul sold Pyxia. Perhaps when you grow up and have a family you will realize how much Paul had to humble himself and admit he was in some bad financial times and needed money and asked for donations and eventually had to sell Pyxia to keep a roof over his family's head and be able to move to an area that had better job opportunities for him.

Aurora isn't a competitor of PureBasic, as Aurora is OOP, not procdeural. Each language and methodology have their pros and cons.

The #1 pro for me in any language Paul turns out is the stability and lack of bugs. For me, Aurora will replace the useless BlitzMax.

As to PureBasic. I had some major surgery in the beginning of June and will have some major surgery near the end August. Its going to be some time before I can afford Aurora, so I have no plans of ditching PureBasic (I LOVE PureBasic) anytime soon.

Aurora is owned by one person. Paul Turley. From what I understand, those 6 people ... or yet, 10 people, are Partner Developers of the compiler. Meaning, we get a percentage of the compiler sales. Plus we have a percentage of the say for the future of the compiler ...

Still, we dont own it :)

If you look on the memberlist, there are more then 10 people listed under that title. However, some are complimentary and do not have voting nor percentage rights, they are only there under special circumstances (from what I can tell).

Either way ...

From the recent events, and since the year (??) Since paul sold that company. It has been abandoned. There are public evidence that Tom even cares for the company, nor the iBasic product line. Dispite what the mods on the forum state, people have to look at the facts. Need evidence.

I don't think Aurora will cause PB to lose any sales but i think that Aurora will be extremely popular. The features of OOP, the large standard library set of high level commands (still in development) and the builtin 3D engine will sell it to many people. Aurora is not Basic and not C, but somewhere in between. It can interface properly with all Windows technologies such as API, COM, etc.

I'm seriously considering writting my next project (a game) using Aurora.

I for one am not overly interested in Paul's reasons for selling iBasic; his reasons are his own and I respect them. The fact is, however, that iBasic now appears to be struggling to survive whilst the new owner appears somewhat aloof and unconcerned. I guess I'm really saying that as far as Aurora is concerned, I wish first to see it on a more secure footing (as indeed I would for any new language which interested me). There's no doubting Paul's unbelievable programming skill and depth of knowledge or his integrity, but as demonstrated, shit happens and whilst the language is essentially owned by a single person, you just never know what's around the corner. This of course links back to the origins of this thread.

Now, as we all know, in the case of Purebasic, if Fred was run down by a car doing over 100 mph, he'd simply get up, dust off the red cape and blue tights, shake his head disapprovingly and head for the nearest coffee bar! 8)

You've got to be kidding me... If you want a free aurora... just wrap some api in 'nice' functions. I mean thats pretty much what that guy did anyway. What a joke... I think I'll take the GNU C++ compiler, make a few wrapper functions using 'normal words' as a library, and sell it all bundled up.

Since most (if not all) programming languages start out that way, I fail to see how you could be offended ...

Yes, there is some doubting. For starters, why did he sell his forums postings a CD without considering agreements from the forums participants?

Is that integrity to you, srod?

To everyone else, thats theft of intellectual property.

Not necessarily since by posting within a public forum you way well be agreeing to wave all rights of ownership. Take these forums for example. Presumably Fred pays for the server space and as such may well be entitled to claim some kind of ownership over all posts. It's certainly true that in the case of defamatory comments, the buck stops with the hosting company etc.
