The few times I might have used it I didn't want it to express joking but more confusion or pondering. Now these 'messages' have become wrong.
But it would be often be interpreted as "how stupid can you get" (that's what I interpret it as). For confusion or pondering there already are two smilies, :? and :?:.

Anyway, what is the problem with that interpretation?

It's rude. If I wrote out "how stupid can you get?" instead of the smiley I would expect to cause offense. You wouldn't?

About insulting: if you write that it's because you mean it, at least I hope for your mental sanity. So there is nothing wrong with that from my point of view. You just have to live with the possible consequences like any action in life, but I'll never tape your mouth even if I know you are about to insult me or anyone else. I find similar occasions revealing on many levels. I agree a forum shouldn't became a war-zone, but if the people who ARE the forum need to be punished or taken on a short leash to avoid that, maybe it's better to not give to that people a place where to meet.
Anyway I read a lot of posts in the past where in a way or another someone was accusing one person or a class of people to be idiots, without the need of the terrible "roll-eyes" and I didn't see any head fall.

About the smiley: a lot o people here are using a language it's not their own, and that's a way bigger cause of misunderstanding. A little use of gray matter from both the sender and the receiver, and the ability of not jump to conclusions after 1 post of 5 words should be sufficient to keep all under control without the need of external arbitration and the removal of "suspected" symbols or particular words.

Instead I find the presence of TWO identical wink smiles disorienting.
And I don't feel the forum as particularly "safer" today :)

edit: corrected typos to reduce the possibility of misunderstandings.. yuk yuk yuk

I vote for bringing the roll-eyes back!
If any of you native English speakers have any suggestions for the above text, please let me know (via PM). Thanks!

It is a matter of subjective interpretation.
It's rude you say and you think?
That's not rude, it is only for someone who is as susceptible as a child.
When someone conscious says to me "how stupid can you get?" i understand and interpret, "hey you, may be you could improve yourself!", which is welcome to me.
Do you see what i mean?

...and yes, please, return coding. This was started by Fred, btw,

Certainly, but to me that smile look cruel, almost satanic, with a clear malevolent feeling not open to discussion whatsoever!

I think you should change it with a wink, like this >

Or maybe with the up-to-date roll, like this one ->

To me the :? is one step beyond confusion when you've reached the realm of frustration
and the :?: is only a technical sign maybe used to intensify the gnawing of a question.

I think it depends on the context if those eyes mean one is unsuccessfully searching his own brain for answers or uncapable to grab the understandability of something.

Still I plead for rather removing it for good and leaving the postings with error images but with the screwed meanings.

If you doesn't want a roll-eyes-smilie, then please remove it
from the smilie-list. At this point, only those who read about it know,
that the second wink-smilie is an old roll-eyes-smilie. And the others
think it is a forum-bug.

If you remove it, old posts will have the smilie-code as plain text and
everyone knows, what it means. At my point, i will write *roll-eyes*
or some thing else, but i will not use the wink-smilie for it. So i get
the same result as with the real roll-eyes-smilie. :P

And yes, it is meant like everyone reads it ... sometimes, one smilie
can say more then hundreds of words. ... and sometimes,
it is really needed.

possible interpretations:
- do you really mean, what you are writing?
- that post was unnecessary
- you has made the same mistake again
- please use brain.exe next time
- ...

but yes, it is the harsh way of saying something.

Btw, just asking...
How much time do you usually wait before releasing a final version?

I mean, you release PB 4.51 final after fixing every known bug, or is there a fixed period which you usually wait before releasing it? And how much time would that be?

Thanks

There is no fixed rules, but we usually wait a bit to ensure we won't miss an obvious bug.
