10 minutes of German talkshows at Dinner time will make you believe we are not even a bit less dumb than the Americans but 100 times more pervert
The thing is turning on our news channel at 8 pm or Talkshows on the Channels ,which are paid for by taxes (though they are seperated from the states by law and are the most government critic of all channels) will show you very intelligent people discussing interesting subjects on a very good level, maybe one of the problems in America is that TV channels are dependent on advertising which makes the focus on mass audience, which in turn lowers the standards to an absolute minimum (i.e. understanding spoken words).
I mean it's not only school that educates people, I would guess that atleast 40% of what I know comes from other sources.
By the way this 1 inch story is shocking even more so when it comes from an American ex? teacher and considering that they didn't even draw a two inch line in the end. I'm not to well informed about American school but I guess 6th graders should be about 12-13 years old isn't it?

A good example is a major news story, all the news networks will report the story but no two will be reported the same way or provide the same "truths".
good explanation, good example. thank you *bow*

filtering applies everywhere information is transported.

let's have an example.

Student A and Student B are studying Phisics in the lessons of Professor A.

Professor A is teaching what he finds in books he agrees to,
based on what he was tought by his Professor.
his filters were establisht during his youth and study,
are supplied constantly by what he calls his opinion,
and so directly affect what and how he teaches.

If Professor B invents something new on the Topic,
Professor A may just dislike it because he dislikes Professor B,
because he was educated in another tradition than Professor B,
or whatever.
but this may lead to the case, that the invention of Professor B
is never tought to the Students by Professor A.

Additionally, the things Student A and Student B learn are directly influenced by their filters.
they also have a different personal history, so they percieve the same facts in a different way.

so, they both learn a different kind of Phisics.

Imagine a Student C learning from Professor B, he will learn something completely different
because he learns about the new invention the Students A and B will not be informed about.

so, we have threee persons, Students A, B and C, who studied Physics at the same time,
but who have different pictures what it is at all.

only when these three sit together, talking to each other and learning from each other,
they have a chance to alter their filters by watching the filters of the others.

@Nik: Well my point was that the intelligent don't even bother with TV except for an occasional guilty pleasure. Whats the point of watching people debate things on TV when you can debate them yourself with other people? You learn much more from the latter.

Btw, 6th grade is usually for 11 yr olds here.

Honestly schools provide no real knowledge, only the tools you'll need to go out and obtain knowledge. Its all what you make of it, as is just about everything in life.

I'm not saying everything is great in America's schools. I think they need a major revamp of supplies and they shouldn't just pass kids to make them "feel good about themselves", however you get out what you put in and even the current system is very good if you actually do your work and read the material and think about it, instead of going home and watching TV for the next 6 or 7 hours until bedtime.

You think your TV channels paid for by taxes don't still attend to the very same things as free market channels? That's a bit of naivety. They still suffer the same problem. If less people watch it or less people don't like what they are watching, then it will lose its funding from the taxes in one way or another.

only dumb people will go to a talkshow to be exhibited.
smart people avoid a situation that is only constructed to fool them.

Well in Germany they are bound by law to also stream educational stuff, today it's less than a few years agoe when there was a pure educational program at some times of the day, which for example told about physics without omitting formulas, which is nowadays unbelieveable I mean showing physical formulas on TV would most likely cost your Job. We also had a show about comuter stuff which even showed how to build a device that could extract the sourcecode discussed in the show from the TV signal. (They mixed it in encoded in the parts of the picture you can't seeon a normal screen).
However even though it's worse than it once was those tax payed channels still have very educational program, for example I often watch those higher level talkshows (with guests from politics and science) with my parents and we discuss them afterwards.
I think that this is also very important that since we have more than two very similar political parties listening to what their representatives have to say is a very important part of our democracy.

Sometimes they have some interesting stuff actually. I am a fan of "the critical eye" as you might guess :) And "best evidence".
Those might just be discovery sciense on the scandinavia / discovery europe. Sometimes i might watch brainiac too :P

At discovery itself my favorite show is still mythbusters.

A lot of the Americans are actually very smart!
But I have to admit that a lot of stupid Americans are centered in a country called the USA.
Those smart Americans are from North America and are called Canadians.

I don't get Discovery Channel here because of bad satellite system. But I like Mythbusters too, and I love some series for calming down, especially X-Files, (Dr.)House, Boston Legal and a few others

Not all Americans are stupid - some are very stupid...
Makes you wonder how they landed a man on the moon.
Oh yes - Germans. Oh well.
