You are absolutely correct. Even though some of the games were nothing more than stick men, the gameplay was fun & addictive :P I miss the era very much.

Although, I still go back and play various games from time to time via Amiga Forever and C64 Forever. Sometimes I even have a little fun and program on said emulators, although that is quite rare for me now :P

Great topic this, I dunno how I missed it when it was first posted!

It was hard to keep it to ten, most are ancient. Even though visuals are nice, a new game has to rank high in playability (and replayability) for it to work its way into the list. :D

Jumpman (Atari 8-bit), Jr. also
BoulderDash (Atari 8-bit), II also
Alternate Reality (Atari 8-bit)
Ultima IV (Atari 8-bit)
Archon (Atari 8-bit)
Last Star Fighter (Atari 8-bit), renamed as Star Radiers II
Descent III (PC), II also

Oh yeah (not really sticking to the top 10 exactly, sorry!)

"It Came From The Desert" on the Amiga. Brilliant.

Pong? Are you serious?
It's one of the games that has aged a lot and actualy isnt much fun to play today for most people.

Historicly i dont give it much credit, it's highly overrated. It even wasnt the first of it's kind. The Magnavox Odyssey was develped in 1968 and featured a game extremly similar to pong.

The only historical credit i give to Pong is that it spawned countless consoles that cloned the gameplay.

Do you know Plasma Pong? I think it's awesome. Playing Pong with a Joystick or even worse, with a gamepad is not much fun. But with a mouse, I think it's OK.

Settlers Of Catan (Boardgame/Tabletop) (<- probably not what you had in mind, but otherwise my Top Ten list would be one short)
Zelda - Ocarina Of Time (Nintendo 64)
Max Payne II - The Fall Of Max Payne (PC)
Lemmings (Amiga)
Midnight Club II (PC)
Pinball (Arcade, Amiga, PC...)
Portal (PC)
Trackmania (PC)
Need For Speed Most Wanted (PC)
Creeper World (Flash)

It's hard to prioritize, but the first three are my all-time-favourites.

It was a part of my historical list. I almost don't play anymore... Pong was the first game I played. In arcade, it was really fun, and there wasn't anything like this at this time ; there was a big rotating handle to move, no joystick, giving a fast and direct response, what is really rare today. I'd like to know where these machines are by now.

Westwood Studios Bladerunner Game, and MS Tetris from Windows 3.1

Its not ten games, but it counts for ten games IMHO. Just check out how MS Tetris
reacts when you push it beyond its limits.

Edit, I also like Text Adventure Games..

If you actualy played Pong i respect your choice.
Many people include it in there list of best games just because they think they have to and actualy never played it. At least not the original Pong.

And as i said there was one thing just like Pong. Developed in 1968 and released to the marked the same year as Pong. The difference is just that the Odyssey was a home gaming console not a arcade machine. It also had the rotation controllers. And it was the very first game console. It even featured cartridges for different games. But cartridges dont had any ROM inside. They had just some circuit paths inside that connected the different parts of the console in another way so that you get a different game. The Odyssey actualy didnt had a microchip inside.

There was a location at the french-belgium frontier called "Le mont noir" where there were carousels and misc amusements for childs. I played there often. I realised it was pong years after, as I was very young (before 10), when I saw the arcade photo. Older friends confirmed this, and I felt lucky! I didn't know the Odyssey. Saddely, the park has been now replaced by money and arcade games only. Not so fun.
