I'm actually using Linux just now but I realy don't like some things in Linux I mean the system itself is genious but it's open sourceness leads to problems too. I haven't got any good fonts here except for the LaTeX ones which are only usable in LaTeX, the applications only have a stylguildine within their library system and though upcoming xgl is great th windowing part as is is slow as hell. Another thing are the problems with multimedia files which come from trhe liscencing issues and so on. However I like Linux though it is not always an easy girl. And at the moment I use it probably 80% of the time, I like the bash for example and the good compilers and speed of execution....
So my big hope is that Mac OS X helps me to combine the professional and the effective power user world to a good system. However it's not only Mac OS X heading this way but also distributions like Ubuntu and Novell Desktop Linux wich combine the work of the open source gurus with a little bit professional organisation and leadership.

Mac switched to Intel because PCs were pasting them on speed?
AFAIK primary cause motorola couldnt offer the needed amount of CPUs needed for keeping the delivey of ordered MACs. In germany in the last year if not buying a machine which already was on stock at the dealers store you had to wait some weeks.
Mac OSX is stable because it's based on Unix?
Well, why not get a PC with Linux on it?
Because OSx is like a synergy of stability of linux and of handling comfort of OS9. Install software and you know what I mean. Use it for some days and youll really like it (if encountered the hidden features ;) ). Anyhow even the system is stable, some apps. do still suffer from unstable behaviours, like Thunderbird i.E.
You could even use Wine for your Windows apps and not have to attend bootcamp.
Isnt wine an emulator? Do Win apps. do suffer from speed when running under wine? Not shure. I did some excurses in Linux and at that time (1 year ago) I stuck with PC-Windows / MAC-OSx.

Another thing to remember is that MacOS X is far from stable! Don't believe me? use it for a few years. One of the main problems i have now at work with MacOS 10.4.x machines is that occasionally the machine will not boot up and totally fail only displaying the spotlight search tool icon in the top right hand corner of the desktop. This even corrupts the boot volume itself and nothing can be done other than totally reformatting the drive and re-installing the OS.

Here describes the problem and a possible fix, which i have never got to work:

On the other hand i have never had any problems what so ever with windows 2000 server/XP/XP Pro.

Yupp, I noticed that once on 10.4 only too.
A service assitant from our dealer gave me 2 rules of tumb according to keep 10.4 running stable:
DONT use Suitcase prior the "fusion" version. Use OSx's system internal fontmanager instead.
DONT ever think about using Norton Utilities. There is shareware out there which also does an equal job. And the shitty issue in here beside that is, that you cant do a clean uninstall of Norton Utilities on OSx.
The system itself is stable as hell, but some Software companies dont keep their software compatible by offering updates fast enough.
